So good to have a spotlight on this poem by Denise Levertov (Start the Week, BBC Radio 4)

Paused my work, stood from my desk & went to make a cup of tea in the kitchen.

As it steeped I picked up a book of poetry from the next room and read a few on the porch.

Well, damn it, Denise Levertov just *had* to DESTROY ME, leaving me teary-eyed & unlikely to work for awhile.

C’mon, Denise.

TRIVIA TIME!:
Who wrote these lines?
- I saw a man pursuing the horizon;
Round and round they sped.
I was disturbed at this;
I accosted the man.
It is futile, I said.
You can never 's
You lie, he cried,
And ran on.

- Robert Lowell
- Denise Levertov
- Walt Whitman
- Stephen Crane

To live in the mercy of God
To float, upheld,
as salt water
would hold you
once you dared.
~ Denise Levertov

I only know that I know nothing.

In synagogue
high roofbeams echo like the far
hush of waves

to the prayer of my tribe:
- Avinu Malkeinu
hear my voice -

"Wiping my glasses and leaning westward,
clearing my mind of the day’s mist and leaning
into myself to see
the colors of truth
I watch the clouds as I see them
in pomp advancing, pursuing
the fallen sun."

neighbor’s little library: thank you thank you. I was dedicated to swiping the title alone before knowing the content. Might could bring the fat bird book back. Should have known it’d be the usual suspects come to save my podcast fevered mind. #dreams #pain #books #poets #human

"One of the men we quote, Gal Levertov, used to represent Israel before the International Criminal Court, and he said that if he were asked to defend Israel’s conduct in Gaza, he could — on the basis that there was a military objective.

Gal Levertov, used to represent Israel before the International Criminal Court, and he said that if he were asked to defend Israel’s conduct in Gaza, he could — on the basis that there was a military objective. But he said there’s no defending what’s happening in the West Bank.

thank you, Mr Berry

I’m reminded that (like Mary Oliver) he often gets collapsed into sentimentality

As if this were a nation in any danger of being sentimental about the natural world - as we wage as long as war with our environment as we have with one another

Sentimental my ass

“‘If I had to, I could make a legal defense of what the Israel Defense Forces have done in Gaza,’ said Gal Levertov, … who represented Israel before the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
‘But what is happening today in the West Bank?’ he added. ‘It’s indefensible.’”

It's whitewashing genocide.

"If I had to, I could make a legal defense of what the Israel Defense Forces have done in Gaza," said Gal Levertov ... who represented Israel before the International Criminal Court ...

"But what is happening today in the West Bank?" he added. "It’s indefensible."

THE FOUNTAIN
Don't say, don't say there is no water.
That fountain is there among its scalloped
green and gray stones,

it is still there and always there
with its quiet song and strange power
to spring in us,
up and out through the rock.~ Denise Levertov, "The Fountain" in THE JACOB'S LADDER
