Two kneeling alabaster figures in St Andrew’s Church near West Dean Gardens, West Sussex. They are the son and grandson of the Elizabethan judge Richard Lewknor. These two figures, also called Richard, survived a fire in the church.

A romanesque bucket font. It is carved with a pattern of linked roundels with two hidden faces amongst the foliage.

Why the Oxford Tube stops at Lewknor!
It’s exactly that! If you have stops within 15 miles you get BSOG (basically tax relief on fuel). Lewknor is <15 miles from Thornhill so means Stagecoach gets a subsidy for that part of the journey. www.gov.uk/run-local-bu... www.gov.uk/government/c...
Run a local bus service
Run a bus service in and out of London - registering, London Service Permit, bus registration, public service vehicle operator’s licence, PSV

Confirmed: the reason for Lewknor! (BTW Oxford Tube fans may be interested to know that the stop announcements are now all done by a gentle and refined robot voice, so no more getting rudely woken at christ-knows-what-o'clock by the driver's sudden bellow of "LEWKNOR".)

I've realised where purgatory is. It's here, in this bus stop, where you have to wait in the nothingness.

#31DaysOfGraves Wreath

I rather like ample but graceful C19th tomb angels, as here in St Margaret's, Lewknor.

This is the monument to Richard Paul Jodrell, d.1831, with a marble sarcophagus and fine carvings of angels with wreaths by P Bazzanti of Florence, 1833. @stroudstory.bsky.social

Pub 3047, Leathern Bottel, Lewknor. Been in every GBG but one and it shows. One of those rare 'food but incredibly pubby' birds. Carpet a solid 8. Things hanging off ceiling aren't car air fresheners. Gravity drinking Brakspearly.

Day 17 #31DaysOfGraves is 'relocated'.

St Margaret's, Lewknor has two relocated early C17th monuments in the chancel. In 1845, they were moved West & their canopies removed - quite an insult to their grandeur! @stroudstory.bsky.social

The component parts bear fractures possibly provoked by this.

#FontsOnFriday Stumbled across this beauty, while looking through my photos of St Margaret's, Lewknor.

Fine C12th font with linked beaded roundel decoration - filled with crosses, rosettes, or faces (view images full size to see the details). @thehistorymouse.bsky.social

There's Lewknor, just off the M40, that's actually where I got off.

You want the biggest horizontal space to be between Lewknor and Hillingdon, not Notting Hill Gate and Marble Arch

Nice little video about the Oxford Tube, though it doesn't address the mystery of why it stops in Lewknor...

Had a good slog over the #Chilterns, then dropped down to do some cracking bridleways from #Lewknor over to #Stadhampton, then home.

X90 was way better, no Lewknor (which was only there so Stagecoach could make out they were a local service so got a tax break on fuel!!

This Lewknor monument makes quite a statement, with its prominent positioning, and angelic grandeur.

Here is another view of the angels holding wreaths. @thehistorymouse.bsky.social

hear me out: the Oxford Tube Sleeper. Band tour bus style, leaves at 12.30. Drives very slowly. Awake to a cup of tea at Gloucester Green at 7am. Possibly whiling some hours away at Lewknor.

A couple of weeks later, I went on a Christmas outing with friends, which meant starting from Ricky and getting the first Chiltern of the day into London.

From there I got on the Oxford Tube to Lewknor, where a day on shed group awaits!

Join Stephen on Race to the Stones 2025 from Lewknor to the Avebury stone circle: a stunning ridge-top journey with generous cut-offs, world-class pit stops, and just enough “cheeky” climbs to keep you honest.
