Currently doing a Vicky3 run as Austria.
I'm at 1855, and I've managed to mostly liberalize, absorb the crown lands, so going well.
I managed to fire the 'absorb the crownlands' event (lowering liberty desire enough) *before* the 1848 revolution, thus avoiding a bunch of headaches.

I increasingly think it's a serious problem that liberal governments do not seem to realize that illiberalism is a (relatively) unified international movement. Working with illiberal regimes will not cause them to liberalize, it will cause them to back your domestic illiberal movements.
i joke but not really: the modern illiberal axis cuts straight through western countries, and represents a truly international movement dedicated to undoing the institutions of liberal democracy at home and abroad

Overall, younger generations are much more liberal in their racial policy attitudes than older generations. If at least a significant portion of this is a cohort and not an age effect, the public overall may continue to liberalize on these matters.

it sucks! it wasn't always this way. and there are some eexceptions, like some republican state legislatures being open to passing bills that liberalize zoning. but at the national level, whether your cause is competing strategically with china or cost of education, there is one Real Problems party

simple things like "liberalize and streamline the immigration system" and "keep doing good economy" and "let people build housing" would have put all this great power competition to bed in twenty years but nooooo
