LitMaps!

I have a note to write up a update to this in Oct 2025 but in short since 2020s (1) Connected Papers, ResearchRabbit, Litmaps etc used the same open sources to build what I call citation based literature mapping tools (2)
This comes up every few years but to be fair i think with OpenAlex, Lens, Core, Semantic Scholar etc we are far more prepared than 5-10 years ago. See medium.com/a-academic-l.... Still it's going to be a huge loss if Google Scholar goes away. (1)

Litmaps transforms literature reviews from static lists into visual maps showing time-citation relationships. By uploading your collection, you can visualize the evolution of a field and identify foundational works or recent shifts more intuitively than manual tracking.

Even for tools that clearly go beyond conventional academic search, there are vast diff between something like Elicit (more LLM based) vs ResearchRabbit, LitMaps that are more about citation/network algos. To be honest, "AI search" these days seem to be more "tools i only recently heard of" (5)

😞Google Scholar is a great tool. But it doesn't show you how papers are connected with each other.

😀Here's how to fast-track your literature review with visual search using Google Scholar's database:

And export papers to Zotero, Mendeley, or EndNote.

You can learn this in 15 min:

While Litmaps helps deepen focus within a specific area, its accuracy depends on the scope of your initial paper set. For broader trend analysis and systematic research gap verification, our module offers a complementary approach: referenceverify.com/en/literature-r....

#2: Developing a Literature Review Skeleton
Ask Elicit, Litmaps, ResearchRabbit these questions: -

📚 “What are the seminal articles in [subfield]?”
🧠 “What are foundational studies on [topic]?”
📚 “Which frameworks are used in [subfield]?”

Run AI-powered searches across Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, PubMed, Scite, and arxiv

Go to v2.researchkick.com/home

Select "Paper Search," then "Search papers."

Type in your query and it'll show you papers from all 5 databases.

And create graphs with Litmaps integration.
