It features an old photograph of the lockhouse and a section advertising Canal Quarters. --- **Lockhouse 28** Completed in 1837, Lockhouse 28 stands where fierce competition between the C&O Canal and the B&O Railroad brought both to a standstill. Both sides fought long and hard in the race to reach the Ohio River valley and control mid-Atlantic western trade. The area at Point of Rocks caused bitter conflict because of the narrow right-of-way here. Ownership of this land was crucial to winning the race. Both sides refused to give up the ground. The canal company won the legal battle, but a compromise was reached, the right-of-way would be shared. The C&O would build next to the river, and the B&O would carve its way through the mountain above the canal. The race to the Ohio and the western trade continued for the next 90 years. One might hear about President Grover Cleveland who sought refuge from the pressures of the White House by coming here on fishing trips. Or perhaps the lockhouse would tell of one lockkeeper who had too much to drink and let the water out of the lock too quickly, sinking a canal boat and its 113 tons of coal. The stories of a lockhouse are the stories of life along the C&O Canal. Built in 1832, Lock 22 is nicknamed "Pennyfield Lock" after father and son lockkeepers, George and Charlie Pennyfield. George tended this lock from 1890-1910; his son Charlie joined him on the C&O payroll in 1900. Charlie was the last lockkeeper to live in and work from this lockhouse. The Pennyfield family remained at the lock after the canal closed in 1924. Experience history... spend the night in a lockhouse! Ever wonder what it was like to live in a lockhouse? Until today, I had no idea what those two stone walls flanking 17th street were for. I had always assumed it was something to do with the lockhouse / Tiber creek back when Constitution Ave. was still a waterway.

A8 #ParkChat Besides having my tent licked by the ponies of Assateague (wish I had video!)? Most recently, I'm going to say staying at a lockhouse on the C&O Canal. It was stupid cold (because February and rustic), but I'd do it again in a heartbeat!
Our bed for the night! Discovered that the ropes that served as a box spring weren't secured correctly, but it was still okay The frozen Potomac River at Edwards Ferry. So much for fishing! The lockhouse at night looked creepy Lockhouse 25 in daylight hours

CanalTrust has renovated some lockhouses that you can stay in, from rustic (22, 25, 28) to 1920s (6, 10, 21). Lockhouse 49 is a hybrid. We stayed at 25 in Feb; it was COLD. There's a special passport. #ParkChat
Lockhouse 25 in February 2026. Yes, just two weeks after SNOWCRETE. We chipped away at the snowcrete on the steps to make it safer to enter/exit, especially at night in case we needed to use the portajohn; this is a rustic lockhouse, so no heat, power or indoor plumbing. Some of the beds in lockhouse 25. All told, I think between the double bed, twin beds and all the trundle beds, I think it can sleep up to 8 or 10 people. Some of the "period" decor in lockhouse 25. The C&O Canal Terminus (MM0) is literally in Georgetown, though IYKYK there's a lockhouse on the National Mall. This is because a lot of the National Mall used to be part of the Tidal Potomac. #ParkChat

It says: One of the best preserved and least altered of old American canals, the Chesapeake and Ohio grew from Washington's vision of linking the valleys of the early west with the east by “ties of communication.” The Potomac Company fostered by Washington to improve navigation of the Potomac transferred its rights in 1828 to the Chesapeake and Ohio Company organized to connect the Ohio at Pittsburgh with Georgetown by a continuous canal. In October 1850 after 185 miles were built the construction ceased at Cumberland until 1924 trade continued on the old canal. Today, it is a memorial to national progress and the canal era. Erected 1942 by The District of Columbia Daughters of the American Revolution; National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. The Lock Keeper's House on the National Mall. The placard on the Lock Keeper's House. It essentially says : The Lockkeeper’s House, located at 17th Street and Constitution Avenue NW, is the Washington’s oldest extant structure in the nation’s capital and one of the few surviving structures from the era of the Washington City Canal. Built around 1837, the house originally served as the residence for the lockkeeper who operated the canal locks that connected the Washington City Canal to the Potomac River and the Anacostia River. The canal itself, authorized in the early 1800s, was intended to facilitate commercial traffic through the city and provide a direct water route from the Anacostia to the Potomac. However, by the mid-19th century, the canal had fallen into disuse due to competition from railroads and recurring flooding.

Fort Washington Park, Battery Decatur. Railroad crossing at Maryland Heights and Harpers Ferry. It's interesting to see old Brady Studio photos of this area, and the abandoned crossing with railroad tracks, and the modern crossing not existing. Water tunnels on Virginius Island at Harpers Ferry National Park. These were part of an elaborate hydrologic system that powered industry here in the 1800s.
