Today's forestry pics. Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) lives up to its name with its long needles and large cones. Much of the original range (southern Virginia to eastern Texas) has been reduced by conversion to other pine species. Now being re-established on many sites.

After the fire, the ground smolders. Then — a week later — green shoots emerge.

#Wiregrass, blazing star, pitcher plants. Native plant species in the #longleafpine ecosystems aren’t just fire-tolerant, they are fire-dependent––many of them need the flames to flower and set seed.

#LongleafPine - Beautiful trees up to 120 feet tall, with a distinctive #FlakyBark. Great tactile experience if you're a tree hugger. Native to Southeastern US, these tall pines are prized in construction for their long straight beams.

Once, #longleafpine forests covered over 90 million acres across the Southeast. Today, less than 2% remains. Centuries of logging, fire suppression, and replanting with fast-growing species have left these ecosystems teetering on the edge.
