Per this report, Chinese-flagged tuna longliners are using North Korean labor, with captains actively attempting to hide the fact. Many of the North Koreans were working on board without returning to North Korea, or even returning to land, for years

New, from one of my mentors, Hal Bernton:

"Today, though, the halibut stocks are greatly diminished. And longliners who make their living from halibut fear that trawling could push the stocks past a point of no return."

Alaska bottom trawlers face renewed scrutiny amid halibut decline
To reduce their unintended take of halibut, vessels in the bottom trawl fleet have an escape hatch in their nets that allows some of the larger halibut to swim free.

It’s important to clarify that none of these disappearances can be conclusively linked to any cause of death. They could have been killed by commercial longliners or sport fishers as well. But the threat of being dragged onto the beach is already illegal and is the easiest to stop.

For three-months, longliners have raided Pacific Islands Heritage National Monument, incited by what has now been ruled an illegal proclamation from Trump’s NOAA Fisheries.

Thousands of hours of industrial fishing befell Johnston Atoll alone.

There's not enough of them to make a fishery of them. They are caught as bycatch by longliners which isn't that sustainable method of fishing in the larger picture.

Technically trawlers do not have hooks, apologies. Longliners do.

It’s difficult to UNSEE this shocking image 😢

Greenpeace captured this image during a five-week investigation near the Emperor Seamounts.

Longliners use billions of hooks🪝to catch fish, and sharks.

Very useful piece of work.

I see that things have gone downhill since the 1980s, when longliners used to send us logsheets with no bycatch recorded at all 🙄
HUGE congratulations to lab graduate TJ Morrell who had his thesis manuscript highlighted as the Feature Article in the Bulletin of Marine Science. His work focused on the quantification of “observer effect” in the United States Atlantic pelagic longline fishery. 🦈
