My implication is also that if you follow this argument, then like Lucretius you have to conclude it's *physical*

When I was a schoolboy I was taught that Lucretius wrote De rerum natura, and Hesiod wrote the Theogony.

No! But I did read Lucretius in grad school; was pissed to find that my idea for arguing that intoxication supports physicalism was scooped two thousand years ago

Have you read Ada Palmer's dissertation on reading Lucretius?

Tbf having Lucretius write your explainer is basically cheating.

Lucretius was surely aware of the reputed routine sacrifice of children to Ba’al Hammon in Carthage, recently Rome’s chief rival for power in the Mediterranean.

I said parents but really, fathers. Lucretius gives the example of the sacrifice of Iphigenia by Agamemnon

In De Rerum Natura (2st Cent BC) Lucretius complains that sacrifice of children by parents is a common problem in all religions, "potent superstition in persuading to evil deeds"

I am a big fan of Lucretius and his work De Rerum Natura, which has been pretty influential on later thought

From the praise of Epicurus to the song of matter.

After Epicure Tribute, Elders Spleen begins the De rerum natura cycle (Lucretius). The bridge: Epicurus's victory over superstition.

Same conviction, one cycle to the next: thought that illuminates, unravels, liberates.

But about taking things a bit ad absurdum, have you read Lucretius? His De Rerum Natura is basically an epic poem stanning Democritus and the atomists, and the number of fields it touches on is wild. The cosmology really isn’t bad for some guys working things out from first principles over dinner.

Lucretius came up with this two thousand years ago, claimed atoms sometimes randomly "swerve" and therefore free will, and he was just as wrong then.
