Lyrebirds are amazing creatures.
Autumn rains bring the worms close to the surface of the soil, marking the beginning of Superb Lyrebird breeding season in the forests around Sydney. I recorded 14 lyrebirds this morning including this stunning male who appears to be at least 5 years old. #birds #birding #nature #Australia

Lyrebirds are amazing.
By November the Superb Lyrebirds have regrown their tails and begin to follow females, shake their tails, raise their wings and call vociferously. I came across an entourage of 5 lyrebirds this morning in Royal National Park and this boy was clearly getting hot and bothered! #birds #birding #nature

Sound UP! When a gang of young male Superb Lyrebirds surround you, often within less than a metre. I zoomed back to 80mm but often had to lean back to get this footage. I've left it largely unedited to capture the mayhem of the moment. #birds #birding #nature #lyrebirds

Male lyrebirds possess an elaborate, lyre-shaped tail used in mating displays.

They are found in forests from southern Queensland through New South Wales to Victoria.

Lyrebirds can mimic chainsaws, camera shutters, even gunshots. Turns out copying isn't just a human thing.

Fun fact: Lyrebirds are able to mimic almost any sound they hear both natural and mechanical. Also beavers are one of the few mammals that are raised by both parents (usually). 🦫📣🐦‍⬛ #naturalhabitatshorts #naturalhabitok #naturalhabitat

Take a few seconds to enjoy the beautiful rainforest sounds of the Hacking River Valley and a Superb Lyrebird as he forages. He's ably assisted by a Yellow-throated Scrubwren who are comensal to lyrebirds and are also excellent mimics.

One of the most magical Australian bird calls - the local 'flute' accent of Superb Lyrebirds in the New England Tablelands of NSW.

A superb lyrebird named Nova left a woman stunned after it approached her at the Adelaide Zoo in Australia and started making camera shutter noises.

Superb lyrebirds are native to Australia. Nova was born in 1989, and moved to the Adelaide Zoo in 2017.

One of several beautiful male Superb Lyrebirds which I encountered in the rainforest yesterday . . . I also had amazing encounters with Yellow-throated Scrubwrens having a territorial squabble using call and response mimicry! They have a better repertoire than the lyrebirds! #birds #birding #nature

Fabulous tour in Royal National Park today with bird photography enthusiast Prateek from Mombay. Among 58 species we got a gorgeous male Superb Lyrebird, stunning moments with Satin Bowerbirds and Green Catbirds and finished off with a gorgeous family of Powerful Owls! He wasn't disappointed.

Here’s a closer look at the amazing prehistoric rufous scrub bird - ancient relatives to most song birds and related to lyrebirds, we are hoping that our breakthrough with capture techniques == new opportunities for conservation (1/2)

Australia’s superb lyrebirds ‘farm’ the forest floor to increase their prey – a behaviour rarely seen in nature
“Farming” behaviour is very unusual in the non-human world. As lyrebirds forage, they cultivate the soil and shore up their own food sources.

A little bit obsessed with lyrebirds so loved this feature on how they steward the forest!

In David Attenborough's "The Life of Birds" series, he documents a lyrebird (in captivity) capable of replicating distinct camera shutter sounds, chainsaws, car alarms.

Other lyrebirds can almost perfectly replicate crying babies, dogs barking, rifle shots, car engines revving, video games.

No, the lyrebird is way better. Mockingbirds mostly sound like birds imitating a thing, lyrebirds are WILD.
