Male superb lyrebirds can fake a whole mixed-species mobbing flock — alarm calls plus wingbeats — during courtship and mating (Dalziell et al., Current Biology 2021).

The forest was lying, and rather well.

Lyrebirds can mimic chainsaws, camera shutters, even gunshots. Turns out copying isn't just a human thing.

Spell singer, the design for this harpy came from a mix of magpies and lyrebirds both known for their ability to mimic sounds. When used in a more fantastic setting this ability transforms to the ability to call upon magic using music. (I just thought it was cool)

Some say 13 is a demonic number. Some also say that lyrebirds are naturally able to mimic any sound they hear with ease.

I'm telling you this, of course, because that thing in the shadows is absolutely the girl you matched with online. It's even wearing her clothes, and using her voice perfectly!

the lyrebird loop track — featuring the 1000 steps — dandenong ranges national park, victoria, 🇦🇺

‘957 steps’ according to a kid who came up behind me

i also regret to inform no lyrebirds, but plenty of squawky white cockatoos (*almost* as loud as the school group!)

A superb lyrebird named Nova left a woman stunned after it approached her at the Adelaide Zoo in Australia and started making camera shutter noises.

Superb lyrebirds are native to Australia. Nova was born in 1989, and moved to the Adelaide Zoo in 2017.

ちなみに, a lyre is a string instrument that looks a bit like a harp. I didn't know this until I saw 琴鳥 and looked it up. They're called lyrebirds because their tails look like a lyre when opened.

Crimson rosellas are first and spotted in the low branches of the gums closely followed by lyrebirds, heard in surround-sound and seen on the usual tracks in their forest this morning. #Firstbirdofmyday #Whatsyours

I’m sorry, but American birds have nothing on Australian natives, e.g., cockatoos, bustards, lyrebirds, or noisy miners
