Recently wrote some LaTeX at work. It's notable how being _zealously_ programmatic makes tex way easier.
e.g. I think people are always long-handing things? Stuff like "Let \mu_{i} be the offset."
but doing this is clearly better:
\newcommand{offset}{\mu_{i}}
Let $\offset$ be the offset

Working on some brain region modeling, and one thing that I need to deal with is that if one region gets bigger (as proportion of total), others should get smaller, and this would create some soft constraints in the covariance matrix. I'm feeling too stupid this morning to math this out. Fun though.
![We ultimately want to estimate the wild-captive contrast for sub-regions of the hippocampus. We can extend the model above to multiple regions directly, by expanding the multivariate normal likelihood and adding a $\delta$ parameter for each region. For example, this a model specified for anterior and posterior hippocampus:
\begin{align*}
\begin{bmatrix} \log H_{ALi} \\ \log H_{ARi} \\ \log H_{PLi} \\ \log H_{PRi} \end{bmatrix}
&\sim \text{MVNormal} \left(
\begin{bmatrix} \mu_{ALi} \\ \mu_{ARi} \\ \mu_{PLi} \\ \mu_{PRi} \end{bmatrix} ,
\begin{bmatrix}
\sigma^2 & \rho_{12}\sigma^2 & \rho_{13}\sigma^2 & \rho_{14}\sigma^2 \\
& \sigma^2 & \rho_{23}\sigma^2 & \rho_{24}\sigma^2 \\
& & \sigma^2 & \rho_{34}\sigma^2 \\
& & & \sigma^2 \\
\end{bmatrix}
\right) \\
\mu_{ALi} &= \alpha_{AR[i]} + \beta \log B_i + \gamma A_i \\
\mu_{ARi} &= \mu_{ALi} + \delta_{AR[i]} \\
\mu_{PLi} &= \alpha_{PR[i]} + \beta \log B_i + \gamma A_i \\
\mu_{PRi} &= \mu_{PLi} + \delta_{PR[i]}
\end{align*}](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:ta2whs6wjtpljvpqgs5leu36/bafkreigs7fxsfyiydsm5tz6h4n6qtkj5elfe6znfdz7qoe3awx6i22rtqi)
