I like the MA12 as it's self supporting. It's quick. I'm on air in 2-3 minutes.

Otherwise I have a SOTABEAMS 7000HDS and dipoles, etc., but they take 5 minutes and fall over in the wind - but - are better on 30m and below.

If you’re a foreigner who’s new to living in Japan, one of the biggest cultural shocks will be how common it is for Japanese people to file complaints against their neighbors regarding things like noise and trash disposal. In fact, you probably have received formal complaints from your Japanese neighbors at some point. You might even wonder if receiving complaints is a foreigner-specific experience, since many will tell you that Japanese people live in harmony amongst themselves and only foreigners cause complaints and disruptions. As someone fluent in Japanese and assimilated into Japanese culture, I want to dispel this myth. The reality is that Japan is a very complain-y culture and Japanese people file complaints against other Japanese all the time. Filing and receiving complaints is just a regular part of Japanese life, and you should get used to it (and perhaps start filing some complaints yourself to assimilate into the culture…I know I have…) The Japanese word for complaints is クレーム, which is katakana for the English word “claim.” They call it “claim” rather than “complaint.” “Claim” usually refers to formal, written complaints. Japanese people love to file claims about many things, but 2 areas where claims are especially common are 1) neighbor troubles and 2) customer service. For neighbor troubles, Japan highly discourages direct confrontation and highly encourages filing formal complaints. For example, if your neighbor is loud, it’s against Japanese customs to directly go talk to him, even if you’re polite about it. The correct way to handle this is to file a formal complaint to the landlord/property management in non-urgent cases, and call the police in urgent cases. Japanese source that says directly talking to your neighbor about noise is NOT ok: https://smooth.jp/articles/informatio... Japanese people generally believe in resolving conflicts through a third-party authority like property management instead of direct confrontation, which is why formal complaints are common. If you go talk to the neighbor directly, it might be perceived as threatening and intrusive. Many Westerners think it’s better to first talk to the person and only file formal complaints or call the police as the last resort. In Japan, filing formal complaints and calling the police are the first option. And yes, Japanese people call the police on other Japanese people over noise all the time. In terms of customer service, Japan is a country that allows Karens to wield extreme power over workers. (Japanese Karens can be men, especially older men.) If you haven’t seen my video about “customer harassment”, which discusses Japanese Karens harassing service workers with complaints, please do so. If you wonder why Japan has so many weirdly restrictive rules, here is why. It’s because one Karen has filed a complaint about it in the past, and now no one is allowed to do that thing anymore. Here is a typical example of this phenomenon: https://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp... In this post, a Japanese restaurant worker vents his frustration that one customer filed a complaint against another worker for having blonde hair, now all workers are required to dye their hair black. Whereas most Japanese people are reasonable, it only takes one Karen to impose weird restrictions on everyone, and Japanese people also feel very oppressed by this phenomenon. Many foreigners assume that Japanese people love the restrictive aspects of Japanese culture, but the reality is that many Japanese hate it too. It’s just that 1% of Karens often have the power to make the 99% obey. In many cases, Japan’s restrictive rules are a reflection of the 1% Karens’ demands, not necessarily the true wishes of most Japanese people. This is about something that’s happening in the Osaka Expo. The Osaka Expo is a huge event with many staff members, and staff had a staff exit. Some Japanese Karens filed complaints about staff having their own dedicated exit and staff getting to the train station earlier than customers. As a result, the staff exit was closed, and now everyone needs to leave through the regular exit and arrive at the train station at the same time, which makes the crowding way worse. As you can see in the comments of those posts, many Japanese netizens are furious at the Karens and decision-makers who listen to these Karens and keep enabling them. Sample Japanese comments: 万博というか日本の会社全般... 少しでも他人が得するのが嫌な民族特有の感情... “It’s not just the Expo. This is what happens in all Japanese businesses. This hatred toward others who have good things is specific to the Japanese nation.” 日本が萎縮してる縮図がここにある 少数クレーマーのマイクロマネージメントでどんどん萎縮する “This is why Japan is declining. Japan is declining because of micromanagement by a small number of complainers.” 日本の歪んだ平等意識が生んだ「ズルい」症候群。 “This is an illness that stems from Japan’s distorted sense of equality.” So yea, Japanese people hate this aspect of Japanese culture too. It’s not just you. This is Japan’s version of “this is why we can’t have nice things.”
