Holly and D are 21 & 23 respectively. I wanted them to be adults, but young enough to be kind of fumbling around trying to get used to it.

Evelyn is 27, Az is 33. Evelyn I wanted to be an established adult and Az needed to have a significant age gap with this brothers for Reasons 😇

WHOA a snip from Holly & D's story??? wild!

This is a fair example of Holly's speaking pattern. She has a low voice and speaks quietly, anxiously stopping and restarting midway through phrases.

#macaronlore #wipsnips
D tried to stare only at the purple wall in front of him instead, speaking crisply but slowly. "Yes. It is rather important that my summoner remains whole, if I wish to accomplish what I have set out to do. And so... I will not ask why, but merely what. What things, or topics, do I need to avoid for you?" Holly was silent for a long time, and he wondered if, despite his careful phrasing, he had still crossed a boundary. He assumed she wasn't going to answer, and was getting ready to apologize, when she finally let out a deep sigh, shifting slightly in the water. "Stairs." Stairs? He stopped himself from immediately breaking his word. "If you won't ask-won't ask anything else, like you said... I can at least tell you that I was... was pushed down a flight once. It... it really hurt." She paused again, and he noticed her moving her hand to her knee, rubbing it a little. "It was-was probably the stairs to the third floor, but it might've been the ones in the entryway. I don't... don't remember."

Story start: If Az has slept (usually in his desk chair) he begins work immediately. Rarely, he'll take a break to research whatever else he finds interesting at the moment.

When he is finally tired, which could be days later, he sleeps again. It's pretty depressing...

It's time for a writing preview!

In part two, Az takes Evelyn to attend a Feast—a gathering of Below's nonhuman denizens to eat, drink, and be merry.

It's the first time Evelyn has ever been to a party, and she's determined to have a great time!

#macaronoc #macaronlore #wip
"Have you ever tried any of this?" Evelyn asked as they neared a less occupied corner of the large room, waving her hand over a small table of fruit with a chocolate fountain on its center. She picked up a strawberry from the large pile of them and stuck it directly into her mouth, biting it off from its stem. It was the perfect flavor, sweet and just a little sour. She smiled as she swallowed, looking up at him for an answer. Az was frowning down at it all. The fake smile he had worn earlier was completely gone, replaced by his usual plain expression. Despite that, she thought his tail might have been waving a little more energetically. "No, I have not." "What? Why not?" Evelyn picked up another strawberry and held it out to him with her other hand cupped under it, without waiting for whatever his excuse was going to be. "Eat it. It's really good!" She expected another withering look and was surprised when Az instead delicately plucked the fruit from her fingertips with his own pointed fingers, careful not to brush against hers. He frowned as he lifted the fruit and hers. He frowned as he lifted the fruit and examined it, then cautiously bit into it. He made a strange face. "Ah-did you not like it?" Evelyn bit her lip, unsure why she felt so disappointed. Az shook his head, seeming a little bemused as he slowly spoke. "No, it is simply... simply not what I was expecting. The texture is... strange." "Let's try something else, then," she said encouragingly as she turned back to the display. "It looks like this table's all fruit-except for the chocolate, of course. I really like grapes and tangerines-oh, and they have apples with honey over on that one, that's really good. It gets a little sticky, though, but I think the texture might be less weird for you-does any of that sound good?" "I cannot judge based solely on their names." Evelyn felt her face twisting into an annoyed pout before Az continued, "I will try them all." His expression now looked thoughtful, and she recognized it as the one he wore when he was

I can't sleep so here's a little lore drop about Az!

#macaronoc #macaronlore
I wonder if anyone will pick up on the fact that Az begins thinking of "Az" not just as himself almost immediately, but as his true name very quickly. It is only the second name he was gifted, and that matters to him. C never gave him a name, only a letter, and his parents are as dead to him as they are literally, so their gift only matters to him in that it's what he remembers his missing twin calling him. And Evelyn, without hesitation, without necessity, simply gave him a name. She, of course, didn't understand the gravity of it, but even so it's something he really values. Maybe people will pick this up ... Or they think I'm lazy and just called him Az because two letters

"You must get up," Az insisted when she didn't move. "Or what?" she responded, pulling her lower eyelid down and sticking out her tongue. Az was clearly taken aback, his frown deepening. "I am not certain of what you mean by that." "I mean, if I don't get up, what will you do about it?" She made an even more childish face at him, crossing her eyes and making her hands into horns. Even as she made faces at him, she felt frustrated with not just the situation, but herself. He can really bring out the worst in me. I'm behaving like a ten year old! "What will I do?" Az repeated as he tilted his head thoughtfully, slowly raising his hand to his chin. He completely ignored her bratty expressions. "I had not thought of that." "Well, come back with a sufficient threat, and I might consider moving." She flopped back down and turned her back to him, even though she already knew she wasn't going back to sleep. Az didn't move for a half minute. It was a little surprising that he hadn't given up and gone right back to his work, but she didn't have to look back to know that he was thinking carefully again. She tried to focus on her annoyance rather than how much she liked that about him. I mean if he's not even going to speak to me, what does it matter if I'm sitting there or not? Urgh, what does it matter if I'm here or not in the first place? "I suppose I could find some ice water to throw on you," he finally said. "I believe that is the least harmful torture method I know for humans. However, it has been a while since I have read on that subject..." To-torture? Evelyn spun back up to look at him. He seemed to be carefully combing his memory as his long index finger tapped on his chin. "Lack of sleep was another technique, but that would have the opposite effect of keeping you on a schedule. There was something about consistent noise-" "Okay, okay, I'm up! Geez!" She stood up, dusting herself cozy pajamas off and marching past him into the library. She paused to glare up at him. "You don't have to threaten me." "You just told me to," Az replied, raising a brow in a puzzled look. Evelyn rubbed her forehead.

Evelyn was relieved that not only had she stopped crying, but she'd even been able to wash her face and pull back her hair-loosely, and messily, since she still hadn't gotten the hang of elastics-before C found her in the locker room. "Good morning, kiddo," C said cheerfully, closing one eye to look down at Evelyn discerningly with the other. "Although, I guess you had a rough one, huh?" How the hell could she tell? Oh, I guess my eyes are still red. "Um, just a little," Evelyn admitted, wrinkling her nose briefly. She twisted her hands in her lap, avoiding eye contact. C dropped onto the wooden bench beside her, snapping her pipe into existence. "Wanna talk about it?" "No, not really," Evelyn replied, trying to keep the memory from escaping and again saturating her thoughts, the way Az's blood had his sleeve. The vision made her throat tighten. "All right," C agreed, then held out her pipe with a raised brow. "Wanna smoke about it?" "Absolutely not," Evelyn answered with a withering look.

Updated! As Evelyn explores Below, she encounters something extremely strange—and dangerous!

#macaronoc #macaronlore #webnovel #darkfantasy
"This sucks," Evelyn declared to the empty room. The red wallpaper decorating the walls did not agree or disagree with her. She let out a hefty sigh and dropped herself onto the bed in the middle of the room, scowling up at the round, frosted ceiling light. It also did not offer an opinion. This was, if she had counted correctly-and she was fairly sure she hadn't-the two hundred and fiftieth room she'd entered, and it was another dead end. The closet door only led to an empty closet, and the single-hung window, as all windows she'd encountered, only showed a wall a few inches away. She'd tried to open it to find that it simply didn't; it was like a sculpture of a window without any moving parts. Even the locks didn't turn. By now, that was something she'd expected. She'd started out methodically down the hotel hallway. She opened the first door on her left, and ventured through a normal looking hotel bedroom to the room beyond-an empty industrial kitchen without any food, and silent appliances that didn't turn on when she poked the buttons-to the room beyond that-some form of photography studio without a camera in sight-and beyond that, a classroom, with neat rows of desks and a wall of wide windows looking out onto a blank concrete wall a few inches away. They were the first ones she'd tried to open, but the cranks didn't even turn. She gave up with a shiver, an unsettled feeling growing in her. Before she knew it, she was four unique rooms deep and had hit a dead end in a walk-in closet filled with spiked heels and vibrant pantsuits with large shoulder pads. It felt almost like its owner had just left. She had the ridiculous feeling that if she lingered too long, they would return and scream at her for invading their personal space. So she hurried back, re-searching the rooms for exits she might have missed. She even tried a few cupboards to make sure that they didn't lead anywhere with no luck. Finally, she found herself back into the hotel hallway, and tried the next door. The next set followed a similar pattern, with a children's playroom that looked to be from decades ago, to a sitting room that was surely from centuries ago, to a room with cold stone walls that felt more like a crypt from millennia ago than anything else. That impression was proven correct when she walked down a set of unevenly carved stairs and found a stone sarcophagus on a platform. She'd felt relieved when she realized there was no chance in hell of her moving the lid, and thus it was unlikely that C had decided that counted as a door too and had hidden an exit there. Unlikely, but not impossible, based on C's constantly-changing logic, which was something she really didn't want to think too hard on. She already had 'stabbing Az' as a nearly impossible goal to reach; thinking of C also setting her up to fail gave fuel to the rage deep inside that she preferred to suppress.
