If you have Indian (& especially Maharashtrian) heritage, today is a day of celebration. We honour Ganesha - the god who symbolises the removal of obstacles, wisdom & good fortune. So, to those who believe & those that don’t - I’m sending you good wishes. Happy Ganesh Chaturthi!

1/3: A short thread for UK restaurant critics. When writing about an Indian restaurant, note that just because the dish name - or the restaurant name - has the word 'Bombay' in it, it's not necessarily and automatically 'Maharashtrian'. In fact very few restaurants in UK are...

2/3: First, loads of different communities live in Bombay side by side - Marwari, Sindhi, Parsi, Gujarati, Bengali, Bihari, Goan, East Indian, Bohri etc etc - and not only Maharashtrian. So the dish can be from any of those communities...

I'm reminded of "indian food" in all this tbh

What is Indian food as opposed to say, goan food or maharashtrian food or telegu food. Northern indian food vs southern. Is Mughal food indian?

Made a Maharashtrian popular dish "bharli wangi" (Stuffed brinjals).

Eaten with jawar roti (hand pressed roti made of sorghum flour), it's a delicious way to eat brinjals. Nutty and flavorfull gravy (lots of roasted and crushed groundnuts, dry coconut, and a freshly made spice mix).

I feel sad that folks don't get to experience more kinds of Indian food. you mostly get a type of north or south Indian food. bombay street food is picking up, but there's soooo much more. gujju, kerala, karnatak, hyderabadi, andhra, goan, bengali, kashmiri, parsi, maharashtrian, and more!! so good.

Sunday morning is mostly back to the roots cooking. This traditional Maharashtrian way of cooking the greens is one of my favorites. Generically called "peeth perun bhaji" the method extends to capsicum/onion. Lunch today was bhakti with peeth perun methi and leftovet chicken curry. #FoodSky

Maharashtrian veggie delights at Croydon's new Shree Krishna Vada Pav - a comforting misal pav (sprouted bean curry with crunchy sev, coriander and buns); sabudana khichri (tapioca, potato, green chilli & peanuts); and the eponymous vada pav (deep-fried potato patty & chutneys in a bun).

Golden, crispy, and full of flavour—Sabudana Thalipeeth is a Maharashtrian classic! Soaked #Tapioca pearls, mashed #potatoes, roasted #peanuts, cumin, and chilies add perfect kick. They're flattened and roasted with ghee - magic of textures. Recipe by Archana @ministry_of_curry! #food 🍜🍽️

My mom wrote this piece describing the first two years of her married life in Iran. My parents were happy there but the Iranian Revolution in 1979 forced them to flee. My mom was pregnant with me at the time, she and my dad had to board different planes, and a few months later I was born in Mumbai.
The Iran Diary
My  marriage had got fixed to a tall,  handsome, budding architect who was working in Iran. Mine was a typical Maharashtrian arranged marri...
