#mahseer
Topmost addition to #FishyFeb; Golden Mahseer, an endangered fish found in the Himalayas. While the average size is much smaller, it can grow to almost three meters in length 🐠

#FishyFeb and #FebruArty have the same prompt so here's a Lionhead Goldfish in the mix! The size variation is getting out of control.

#FishyFeb 10th - Jelly
White-spotted jellyfish for the background but I don't even know what the foreground is going to be. Do we have an eel theme soon by any chance?

#FishyFeb 11th - #Shark
Addition to the bottom of the pic. A. pelagicus, more commonly known as the Pelagic thresher. That tail isn't just for maneuvering, they use it like a flail to stun their prey 🦈

My current hunch is Golden Mahseer, India. They were popular sport fish for British colonialists and the wording penned on the scale suggests colonial era sport fishing. Suryamal is one place this definitely happened. Also, taking Golden Mahseer scales as trophies was equally common.

Yes? No?

Got asked about prints during #FishyFeb so anyone who wants, here's the completed #art sans labels that should work for basic paper size 🐡

If you want a bigger one, DM me to order a physical poster. Sorry for not just releasing the high res file but I've had issues with art theft in the past 🫤

Getting pretty crowded isn't it? As a bonus, fixed the lionhead goldfish. Now it's less cute but more accurate.

In Harwich for a few hours/beers for the @harwichshanty.bsky.social and to meet with @shirazturvey.bsky.social who's one of the organisers. Starting in the Crown Post with an entirely not sensible pint of the lovely Green Jack Mahseer IPA 5.8%.

Thrilled to welcome Dr V V Binoy (NIAS, India) as a plenary speaker at #ABL2025 🙌
He will explore how his team integrates stakeholders’ perceptions with their research on behavioural insights of mahseer megafish—bridging science, conservation, and community to protect India’s ‘Tiger of the River'🐅🐟

#FishyFeb 12 - Hawk

The fish painting gains Cirrhitus rivulatus aka the giant hawkfish. Hawkfishes lack swim bladders and instead of hovering, perch on rocks like birds (hence the name) 🐟

The Thai mahseer minnow, known scientifically as Tor tambroides, can live over 20 years in the wild, making it a long-lived resident of Southeast Asia's rivers and streams.

Hypostomus plecostomus, the common pleco. Like most aquarium fish they tend to grow bigger in the wild and can reach half a meter. Plecos have armor instead of scales, which is cool, but the pattern is very hard to replicate in a small space!

I had the enviable job of annotating @kamal-t.bsky.social's "Seeing the River For the Fish," on a wondrous fish called the mahseer, written for @biographic.bsky.social. It's a terrific story and I had a blast breaking it down.
