We're all scrambling now to live walking distance to the closest train to the city, or building out walkable town mainstreets that mimic city living. The places that aren't are dying with their owners.

If it moves forward at all, I cannot support a 27-storey Mastercraft Starwood proposal for the 403 Richmond (Tubman) site. It is entirely counter to our vision for the accommodation of mid-rise growth on traditional mainstreets.

I've been up since 5am because there's a film crew shooting on Queen Street this morning. Super cool that we shunt most apartments onto noisy mainstreets to protect the side streets from hypothetical apartment noise.

If we are to successfully shift our growth inwards, we also need to focus on funding community infrastructure in the established areas. We need to properly fund the mainstreets program, to invest in the rec facilities and other public spaces.

If drivers think that I'm going either avoid mainstreets (which are the direct routes through the city and where the stores are) or that I'm going to press myself up against parked cars to let massive SUVs with massive blindspots pass me, they are completely mistaken. I'll take my lane.

It would be interesting to tease out some kind of correlation around the physical structure of communities. I follow a YouTube channel that tours unfashionable US places and, wow, they are human activity deserts. America has abandoned its mainstreets and stayed inside.
