I learned a new #kdrama term today: makjang
Shows with over the top storylines and acting. I liken them to what I call "soap operas."
Cinderella Game and My Merry Marriage are considered makjang.
The more you know!

Women’s History Month, Day 4:
#SongHyeKyo rose to fame through Asia with the kdrama #AutumnInMyHeart, a makjang that redefined the genre and pioneered a new korean wave making her the first and biggest Hallyu star of her generation.

THE MAKJANGS HAVE RETURNED!! #FirstLady is definitely a makjang (maybe light makjang - no kimchi slap yet) and I am loving it! So many unanswered questions and secrets and then #MsIncognito starts today which I am hoping will be another makjang cuz it sure sounds like it is going to be one

I keep using the term “makjang” which might not be widely known by everyone on the #kdrama feed
So here’s a fun, detailed Reddit post about the term. Enjoy!

Woah I just don’t get this 😅
#WhenThePhoneRings is chock full of makjang plot points, but it subverts makjang cliches
Like, we are intro’d to an ML who is controlling & dangerous. But a perspective shift later on flips this fully on its head, and we can ship the OTP without championing an abuser

People were calling it Wattpad coded so I think that captures the vibe 😅

Please consider picking up #WhenthePhoneRings (oh, snap, see what I did there😂). This is the twisty goodness of a makjang wrapped up in a mystery thriller with some spiciness and comedy thrown in for extra seasoning! Plus, it's going to make for great tl discussions!

Finished kdrama Perfect Marriage Revenge & enjoyed it a lot. It's a nice, light makjang. But it's definitely a makjang so be prepared for over the top birth secrets & people taking evil to almost comedic extremes. No one's breaking new ground here, really, but not everything needs to.

Challenging! IDK about 2 seconds, but here are some that grabbed my interest within 2 minutes
#twDrama #ImMarriedBut
#kDrama #QueenInHyunsMan
#kDrama #CoffeePrince
& for sheer OMG LOL makjang from the opening frames , #kDrama #EonniIsAlive / #BandofSisters - still the MOST makjang opening I've seen

I agree with this. I’ve never liked makjang dramas as the few I’ve tried feel too manipulative & nihilistic (or rather, it’s difficult to believe in the humanity of the characters enough to fully enjoy them)
In the case of #LovesAmbition however, the makjang element seems more like an aesthetic,

i have confused mukbang (an online video broadcast in which a host consumes food) and makjang (Makjang dramas are similar to American soap operas. The characters and plot are completely over the top.) please forgive me
