Excited to share that our story on S. aureus antagonism by Malassezia is live today in Current Biology! The paper has changed a lot since the preprint with the very exciting addition of having identified the antimicrobial effector generated by M. sympodialis.

Hilft Bifonazol gegen Fuß- und Nagelpilz? 🤔

Ja!

Bifonazol ist ein Breitbandantimykotikum, das gegen verschiedene Pilze wirkt – darunter Dermatophyten (verursachen Fußpilz) und Hefen wie Malassezia furfur.

How anti-dandruff shampoos work? 🧴

Shampoos reduce Malassezia (with compounds like zinc pyrithione), normalize scalp scaling, and reduce irritation. They don’t fully eliminate yeast, but keep the system below a symptomatic threshold.

As an abundant fungal colonizer of human skin, Malassezia has long been associated with pathological skin conditions, yet its role in skin homeostasis remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate th...

Fun fact: the skin fungus Malassezia globosa produces a protein called MGL_1304 which acts as an allergen when you are sweaty, making you seemingly allergic to sweating.

This fungus is what makes you feel itchy when you are sweaty. It also causes dandruff.

This is me. And I am not a cute "dewy and lightly flushed" exerciser. I turn red & blotchy and sweat -hard-. Electrolytes in my water have made a huge diff in how I feel regularly and after exercise. And my blood pressure also went down.
For me? When I exercise, I basically excrete salt. Before I started using super-salty hydration, I would try doing things like HIIT and then get dizziness and headaches and feel like shit for days.
