And also "maltster" has come out as "molester".

Small thing but—tipster at a mid-size Northeast brewery told me Trump's tariffs will likely force their brewery to switch away from a 15yr maltster partner to a multinational, Malteurop, which is able to offer better stability on pricing.

Sad news from the UK maltings world, very sorry to hear of the passing of James Fawcett of Thomas Fawcett & Sons. He was a gentleman maltster. RIP

“The Maltmaker” statue,
#Ware #Hertfordshire
1999

To commemorate 600 years of the malting industry in Ware.

The maltmaker stands with his huge shovel & cat whose job was to keep down the number of mice & rats.

HBD 🎂 (290?!) to the one and only John Adams! From the #archives: I wrote about how the descendant of a Puritan maltster raised a glass… 🗃️ earlyamericanists.com/2015/10/30/a...

🔎 Tracing your family history? You might come across a bastardy bond — a fascinating record created when a child was born outside marriage.
Here’s one example from the Borough of Launceston: John Goodenough, maltster, was named as the father of a child born to Sally Goodman in 1815.

My current employer hosted my former employer for an Oktoberfest shindig this afternoon and I felt good enough to go. Where would Minnesota’s brewing industry be without these two knuckleheads?

An exploration of terroir, we brew this gem with Gladfield Malt, a boutique maltster just outside of Christchurch, and hops grown at Garston Hops in the Southland, just outside of Queenstown.

It's a gem in our line-up.

For Pellicle, I visited the UK’s oldest maltster, French & Jupps. Which specialises entirely in crystal and ‘patent’ roasted malts. This is part history of a company dating back to 1689, part technical look at how these malts are made, and why it matters in terms of the beer we drink.

In February 2024 I visited French & Jupps, the UKs oldest existing maltster, and roasted malt specialist. I’d never heard of them before, despite them being in operation since 1689. It’s story fascinated me, so I wrote it for @pelliclemag.com here:

No mention of James Otis, the leading voice in Massachusetts in the early 1760s. Straight to Samuel Adams instead, called a “failed brewer” (he was a maltster) and “[failed] tax collector” (he built political popularity by not collecting in hard times). #HATM

Yes we did, among many others. Gold Rush in Baker City, Oregon for example. But Admiral was one of the biggest in the country. Its distillery customers vanished and I imagine it has been shedding breweries too. Have you guys worked with a smaller maltster, or do you plan to?

This morning's auto-transcription gem is rendering "maltster" as "mobster".

That could make a spicy pitch to magazine editors. Any brewers or distillers care to comment? 😈

Base #malt is an essential ingredient for ale/beer, providing the fermentable malt sugars in the mash tun. This piece on base malt explains so much about the skills of the modern maltster and, yes, I learned a lot from reading it even though I've been studying malt and malting for ages. Excellent!

What more do I want for great beer? The skill, knowledge and experience of how to use these basic ingredients. Brewing an ale/beer involves technology, science and, some might say, a little bit of magic. The magic is actually the skill of both maltster and brewer. 🍺 #malt #ale #beer #brewing #skill
