I finally got to see this species this weekend and now I have seen all the Eastern U.S. Mantidflies 😍

Is there a special way to attract mantidflies because i very much would like to.

I love that mantidflies exist. I love that I get to share a planet with them and I get to be alive when they're alive. That's just way too cool.

Mantidflies sometimes show up at moth sheets and enjoy the insect smorgasbord. Top left is Beautiful Mantidfly (Leptomantispa pulchella) and bottom left is genus Plega.

Mantidflies are amazing little predatory insects. Here we have four species common in the US: Brown Wasp Mantidfly (Climaciella brunnea), Green Mantidfly (Zeugomantispa minuta), Say's Mantidfly (Dicromantispa sayi), and Four-spotted Mantidfly (Dicromantispa interrupta).

Mantidfly mania in Perry County, Indiana on 9/1. There were 20+ on the sheet from at least three species. I usually see Wasp mantidflies on flower heads and this was my first on the sheet. First, photos on the sheet. (1/2) #Mantidfly #Mothing

Mantidflies posing for close-ups. (2/2). Four-spotted Mantisfly (Dicromantispa interrupta) (I think) and Wasp Mantidfly (Climaciella brunnea) doing a foot inspection. Perry County, Indiana. 9/1/2019 #Mantidfly #Mothing

Wasp Mantidflies (Climaciella brunnea) have been on milkweed and yarrow in nearby meadows the past week. Always fun to see them. Washtenaw County, Michigan #MantidfliesShouldBeAHashtagThing

Pretty sure it's a misdemeanor to pass mantidflies without photographing them. This Brown Wasp Mantidfly (Climaciella brunnea) got itself covered in pollen while waiting for prey. Washtenaw County, Michigan. 20 June 2022. #MandatoryMantidfly

I really like members of the order Neuroptera! Antlions, mantidflies, dobsonflies, and snakeflies just don’t get the attention of some of the other orders, despite having very striking and unique features (as well as some ridiculous looking babies.)

Pretty sure this is the weirdest bug I've seen IRL.

Brown wasp mantidfly. Mantidflies evolved mantis-like arms *independent of mantises*, and this one also evolved to look like a paper wasp.

Plant native plants, get the weirdest native bug you've ever seen.

mantises and mantidflies are entirely convergent evolution what the hell
awake& haunted by the newly obtained knowledge that muskrats are not as closely related to beavers as i would have assumed

Hey so uhhh Mantidflies? Yeah they’re metal as hell.

Huh, for some reason I hadn’t realized there are mantidflies in my area. I wonder if I have seen them and assumed they were lacewings. Very cool!

mantidflies are one of my favorites theyre so cool. they look almost exactly like what i would wanna make if i got to invent a bug
December 4, 2025 at 5:29 AM
just learned that mantidflies don't have feet on their raptorial forelimbs (forgetting the feet is a common mistake while drawing mantises)

I guess artists have been drawing mantidflies all along

MANTIDFLIES MANTIDFLIES

I know for sure there were at least three, but I think there were more like 5-6 individuals! I think they're Leptomantispa pulchella 🌿

Wasps are really good at finding niches like that. There are also some mantidflies in Australia that are parasitoids of spider egg sacs.
