"US stocks have underperformed the rest of the world this year by the widest margin in more than three decades as Donald Trump’s erratic policymaking sparks an investor exodus from American assets..."

EVERCORE: “.. This is not about stagflation: inflation break-evens have fallen. ..

“.. It reflects evaporating US growth exceptionalism and the reduced attraction at the margin of dollar assets for reserve purposes amid erratic US decision-making.

These declines across uncorrelated assets strongly suggest forced liquidations hitting all classes regardless of fundamentals as margin calls accelerate.

Margin calls happen when investors borrow to buy assets and the collateral value of those assets falls below required levels.

Brokers demand more cash immediately, and if you can’t pay that very moment, they forcibly sell your holdings.

This often at the worst possible time.

Even gold, traditionally a safe haven, is down.

This is a good indication of margin-call selling.

Traders are liquidating even their safe assets to meet requirements.

If you want Lone Skum to be "margin called" (force to sell stock to cover other assets), I want you to retweet this and follow me.

Hollywood is about claiming ownership of and profit margin over your own assets before the internet does it for you

This is absolutely not true, his margin call level is way lower and very hard to estimate given how many different assets he can borrow against. Assume it's well below $100/sh
Forbes, and Business Insider, reported that Elon would be exposed to margin calls if the share price fell below $740. The shares were split 3 to one since then, so that makes the threshold $246 per share.

Elon Musk financed Twitter’s purchase with borrowed money from Tesla stock as collateral. If Tesla stock crashes, banks could repossess Twitter. If Musk faces a margin call, he may need a private investor bailout or have his companies’ assets, including Tesla, SpaceX and X, liquidated. ♻️

Quick market update:
As forced liquidations continue and new margin calls are issued, Bitcoin prices have now plummeted 25% this week alone.
The scale and disorderly nature of the sell-off are spilling to crypto-adjacent assets and also beyond.

If the world (through boycotts & stock selling) can get Tesla stock under $100, every bank will initiate margin calls on all loans where Tesla is used as collateral. Musk will have to pledge additional assets, most likely more shares. As the price falls, he goes further into margin. Let's go world!

Part of it is that it's not in cash. It's based on assets they hold. You can't spend assets and selling them would tank the value since they own so much percentage of the assets, so they borrow against the assets on margin.

Now, none of these sets of accounts have to declare revenue, so maybe I am a fool and he is just making £100mn on distressed assets, and, you know, maybe he's not lying, but if he isn't is his profit margin on rental investment only 1.2%? The average is 5-8%! Maybe he's just really bad at business?

Watching Tesla drop another 13 points this morning warms my heart because I know Elon has to be freaking out as the words #MarginCall is likely being said to him by investors. Sooner or later, he’s gonna have to add additional assets to cover margin calls. Everyone please pray for a margin call

SEC needs to freeze their assets and find it. Be a real shame if that meant the CEO couldn't meet margin calls because of it.

Medicare for all and taxes on held assets over a certain threshold, margin loans? Highest tax bracket, bezos pays no taxes, margin loan for yachts and rents Venice for a wedding after cheating on his first wife who is a philanthropist now.

Hb tax private jet fuel at 100%?.

Good UK inflation data this morning, especially in services, adds risk to financial market attacks on UK assets based on a stagflation narrative…

It makes it easier for BoE to cut rates at the margin.

(Obviously, not much has changed but this is a vibes thing)

Market history nerd here. I have questions:
Historically, margin loans are secured by the assets bought with the borrowed funds. What asset would secure these loans? Somebody's guess? Somebody else's hunch? Somebody's lunch money?
Maybe it's just an unsecured loan.

I agree with most if this (think slow, secular shedding of US assets; gradual regional displacement of $ centrality bla-bla) but it is also the case that prices are set at at the margin. Think, e.g., of how a possible 2% drop in global oil supply can routinely lead to a 10-15% jump in prices.

We know what it is, Anything below 120 means a margin call, he cannot insure his loans at that point and will have to sell off assets to show actual physical assets to cover them. As it is we are seeing an emergency call for the shareholders. if by Friday we see it in the 200's he will be removed

Broadly speaking, the tax subsidies to clean energy lower the purchase cost because once those assets are operating, they are always marginally profitable. Tax subsidies to fossil fuel lower the operating cost because they can’t compete on the margin without government-funded socialism.

and that’s how a generation of young men learned about margin calls and attachment of assets
September 23, 2026 at 1:21 AM
Yep. Also, margin calls cause people to have to dump their speculative positions to preserve real assets, if they can.
