Tennessee governor Bill Lee has decided to move forward with the execution of Christa Pike, denying her request for clemency. This decision means that Pike is scheduled to be put to death. If the state proceeds with this action, it will reportedly mark the first time a woman has been executed in Tennessee in 200 years. As reported by The Guardian, Pike is currently 50 years old, but the events leading to her conviction took place in 1995. At that time, she was 18 years old. Along with her 17-year-old boyfriend, she killed 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. Both Pike and Slemmer were classmates at the Knoxville Job Corps. The case gained significant attention due to the young ages of those involved, the brutality of the crime, and the fact that a satanic symbol was carved into the victim’s body. Following her conviction for first-degree murder in 1996, Pike became the youngest woman to be placed on death row in modern US history. May Martinez, the mother of the victim, shared memories of her daughter to provide a look at the life that was lost. ## The governor says he won’t intervene She explained that Slemmer loved roller skating and enjoyed volunteering with the Special Olympics. Martinez mentioned that her daughter had an interest in technology and often worked on computers with her husband. Her attorneys stated that they were “deeply saddened and heartbroken” by the choice made by the governor. They argued that the state is ignoring decades of research regarding the level of responsibility an 18-year-old should hold, especially when that person has a history of severe trauma. According to her lawyers, Pike reportedly suffered from sexual abuse starting when she was a toddler, including incidents of rape at ages 11 and 17. Assistant federal defender Stephen Ferrell pointed out that the lawyers during the penalty phase of her trial failed to present this critical information or argue that her age should be a factor. Her defense team also emphasized that the person Pike is today is very different from the teenager she was in 1995. “Throughout her childhood, Christa was failed by people and institutions that should have shown her care and meaningful intervention,” her attorneys stated. They added, “The 18-year-old girl suffering from severe mental illness and near-debilitating trauma no longer exists. Christa is a 50-year-old remorseful woman who understands her actions, receives proper treatment for her mental illness, and provides for and guides fellow incarcerated women.” Pike has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. In her own statement included in the clemency petition, she reflected on the past, saying, “I was a mentally ill 18-year-old kid. It took me numerous years to even realize the gravity of what I’d done. Even more to accept how many lives I affected. I took the life of someone’s child, sister, friend. It sickens me now to think I had the ability to commit such a crime.” While Pike’s attorneys have asked the Supreme Court to stay the execution, the legal process continues to move ahead. Civil rights groups like the ACLU and Amnesty International had previously urged the public to contact the governor’s office to ask for a halt to the execution. Ferrell noted that the death sentence for Pike stands as an outlier, particularly when compared to her boyfriend, who received a sentence of life with the possibility of parole due to his age. A third teenager involved in the case reportedly received probation after admitting to being an accessory.
