Ancient Roman concrete survives for millennia by chemically self-healing its own cracks through carbonation.

This discovery provides @berkeleyengineer.bsky.social a blueprint for designing highly durable, lower-carbon modern infrastructure.

"The problem is that many fabrics are mixed materials and mechanical recycling struggles to separate them into useful parts.

The new technique uses heat and a catalyst to break the long molecular chains of both natural and synthetic fibers into easily reusable units"

🧪 Very high temperature solar thermochemistry is advancing clean aviation fuel. The first step is syngas using solar heat to drive reduction of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide and hydrogen from water. A simpler process makes this more accessible commercially
www.solarpaces.org/solar-syngas...
Solar syngas produced at moderate temperatures to speed market adoption
Two step solar syngas production required two temperatures, 1500°C and 1000°C. A new technique enables both steps to be done at 1000°C

Quick question: what manufactured materials/engines etc., are there currently that could match this longevity? A battery like this won’t be of much use if the materials surrounding it decay sooner (especially space-focused technologies).
