For example, I taught a class on writing and mathematics where the main text was Douglas Hofstadter’s classic Gödel Escher Bach

I'm disappointed people aren't using the fruit fly brain scan for more creative things, like trying to teach it mathematics, or reverse engineering memetic hazards. Instead they're just putting it into another video game, like cmon bro do something cool for once

Just got cited in an applied mathematics journal, which was... unexpected.

Frank and Stan Chat goes back to its roots; it is just the two of us. We consider research from Nottingham Univ into how mathematics teaching is being received by pupils. Frank considers opportunities he has had to learn a musical instrument. Next week it’s the 300th edition.

When you’re sitting with a C-level scientist who built it themselves, there’s no easy way to say you should burn it all down, and stay on their good side 😂 They just won some mathematics or medicine prize, and you’re telling them they built their Google inside out 😂😂

“Mathematics of what isn't there”

Which fits the line better: someone gone, or a future that never happened? Why?

So here I am, back in Maynooth. I'd like to thank the members of the Astronomy Research Centre in the School of Mathematics and Physics at Queen's University Belfast for inviting me and for stimulating discussions during and after my talk, and of course for the hospitality, especially the nice lunch and tea & cakes this afternoon. The hotel I stayed in last night is very close to the campus, in the University quarter, and I got up early enough this morning to have a walk around before my talk.

Unification isn’t achieved by better mathematics alone—it begins when we dare to question what we silently assumed all along.

Reverse Engineering the CUDA Software Stack: A Clean-Room GPU Machine-Code Toolchain for the NVIDIA GB10
CUDA is the software stack through which nearly all GPU computing passes, and most of it is closed: the compiler, the driver library and the mathematics libraries are proprietary, and the machine c…

Reading is an important, but small part of Language Arts/Literacy.

Applying lessons learned from teaching reading to the entirety of Mathematics would be like applying what works for phonics to teaching how to write an essay.

I don't know if you know this about me, but I took ~2 years of CS. The course that prevented me from graduating with a CS degree over English?

Discrete Mathematics.

The so-called science. But even though I chose the path of design, I know it was just a hurdle, not the soul of the thing.

I think (hope) this is doubly true in theory eco-evo, where our ultimate goal is to gain some kind of shared understanding of biological processes by stating things in formal mathematics. I really love looking for beautiful maths arguments, but what I want most is to communicate biological insights.

"The product of mathematics is clarity and understanding [....] The real satisfaction from mathematics is in learning from others and sharing with others. All of us have clear understanding of a few things and murky concepts of many more. There is no way to run out of ideas in need of clarification"

i love that even though the mandelbrot set has infinite detail, a motivated 10yo can understand all of the mathematics which generate it

cohomology fractals are … not that: “Before dealing with the three-dimensional hyperbolic case, we discuss the relevant ideas in simpler settings”

I saw a report about a mathematics professor or some such who quit using homework to grade students but switched to using only proctored tests. Why? LLMs.

I have no sympathy, because I have no fondness for competitive grading. Sneak LLMs to all the students to use for their proctored tests […]
