#megaconstellations
This includes a truly brilliant article, just fantastically written, about satellite megaconstellations ruining the sky. The author seems cool, if a little self-aggrandizing.

There's currently four of these LEO satellite "megaconstellations" in progress:

Amazon Leo: 3,236 sats
Qianfan: 15,000 sats
Guowang: 13,000 sats
Starlink: 12,000-34,400 sats.

The speed with which the astronomy community set up working groups and organized special discussion sessions around satellite megaconstellations (compared with often glacial pace for these things) demonstrates very clearly that astronomers are Not Fine With This. 🔭
In one of my astrophoto groups, a guy posted a photo that shows some non-celestial stuff in it and someone said it’s satellite constellations and another person said that astronomers really hate those and several men have weighed in to say actually astronomers think they’re fine

Me: WE DO NOT

States won't act to curb the megaconstellations unless we, the people, make them. We have more power than we think. 🧪 🔭 🛰️

Satellite megaconstellations will threaten space-based astronomy - Nature
Rapidly growing satellite constellations pose a substantial threat to astronomical observations, with projections indicating that future space telescopes will have more than 96% of their exposures affected by satellite trails, necessitating urgent mitigation strategies.

For the reading list! great new paper on the impact of satellite megaconstellations. 🔭
By 2040, ~40% of the images from Hubble Space Telescope, and more than 96% from new and future space telescopes like SPHEREx, ARRAKIHS, and Xuntian will be contaminated by internet satellite constellations.

Space junk: a thread.

Megaconstellations are, imvho, the low-Earth orbit equivalent of piles of discarded cans.
The Outer Space Treaty, like all treaties, is based around the state, even though it also says that the use of space is the common province of humanity. States eg US are issuing launch licences for spacecraft constellations that harm all humanity. Other nations don't get a say.

Earth’s orbit is now so crowded with spacecraft and debris that a catastrophic satellite collision could occur in just 2.8 days if avoidance systems fail, which could disrupt GPS and global communications, according to a new study.

Mauvaise nouvelle. On apprend que le trou de la couche d'ozone s'agrandit à nouveau. Et, malheureusement, on connaît un des facteurs qui y contribue : les méga constellations de satellites qui se développent un peu partout.

Satellite 'megaconstellations' may jeopardize recovery of ozone hole

Falling satellites released 17 metric tons of aluminum oxide into the atmosphere in 2022, per USC research. Full buildout of megaconstellations could push that to 360 tons yearly, a 646 percent increase over natural levels. Viasat petitioned the FCC for an environmental review. None has followed.

But other states don't have to issue licenses to operate for the megaconstellations. So far they have all acquiesced. Australia, for example, licenses Starlink through the Australian Communications and Media Authority. Collective state action is needed. 🧪 🔭 🛰️

I wonder if the same is true for some space based rader acquisitions, which have wider swaths ?
