*Merbeing

Qweqwete are merbeings from South African Bushmen. They appear in cave art that shows the classic merbeing body type with a human upper body & a fish tail lower half. Qweqwete live underwater & are described as tailed men.

Despite being a merbeing, they were born on land and adopted by Nonmagicals. Born a boy, Nerissa never entirely felt comfortable in their body. Upon a self reported accident where they fell from a bridge they were astounded to discover their merfolk status and their ability to become who they wanted

Renyu (human fish) is another Chinese merbeing from the Shanhai jing. They're described as long-tailed monkeys with long legs and chicken-like claws.

In Merfolk culture, gender is viewed differently. I mean, among them are the Oro who can change their sex. Some say they have 10 differently gendered Pronouns in their language. Mermaid and Merman are really just simplified words they don't really use like we do. Merfolk and Merbeing are more polite

Pania of the Reef is a merbeing from Māori mythology. She's a taniwha, a type of spirit/ magical being, & she falls in love with a human with predictably tragic results. Her half- human son Moremore protects the sea off Napier, New Zealand & often takes the form of a shark, a stingray or an octopus.

At Sea

A category is a broad, two-word descriptor. A Lake Monster, a Sea Serpent, a Merbeing, a Neodinosaur as examples.

The problem will be the categories for misidentifications and hoaxes, which will undoubtedly offend somebody.

Chiru (red ru fish) is another Chinese merbeing. They have red fish bodies, human faces & quack like ducks. It seems like they might be a type of lingyu.
