This isn’t even imperialism, it’s mercantilism.
Gross Imperialism. The United States has now fallen back into a gross imperialistic power under the Trump fascist regime. Pathetic.

His domestic policy is Orbanism, his foreign policy is Putinism, and his economic policy is 17th Century mercantilism.

hot take: i think the move in the direction of a more explicitly extortion based international order is bad actually. I also do not especially relish the idea of re-boning up on mercantilism

The mercantilism will continue until morale improves
Doubling steel & aluminum tariffs increases overall US tariff rates by roughly 1.4%, meaning Trump will have more than septupled tariffs since he took office

It also means Trump won't break his record for longest period without changing tariffs, which is still only 28 days😭

the founding fathers: we are doing a new country because we hate mercantilism

Republicans: the only thing we love more than the founding fathers is our God emperor, Donald Mercantilism
It's genuinely fascinating that the US president keeps announcing that he just flat out doesn't know what trade is, he legit doesn't appreciate the concept of exchange and instead views economic activity through the lens of a dragon attempting to maximise its gold hoard to sit upon.
Well, that took longer than I thought, but he hath spoken:

Here's what I think people are missing about Trump and tariffs. The man has very very few sincere ideological commitments, but mercantilism is weirldy one of them. He's a true believer.

The mercantilism will continue until morale improves
“Assuming that Americans do not substitute higher-priced items and that consumers bear the cost entirely, Mr. Knightley said, the tariffs would translate to a $835 hit per person in the United States, or $3,342 for a family of four.”

This excellent piece by Fariha Kamal shows why broad-based import tariffs can backfire: 84% of US exports and 91% of US imports are handled by firms that both export AND import goods. These companies are deeply integrated into global supply chains. 1/

Why broad-based import tariffs can hurt exports and manufacturing jobs
Across-the-board tariff hikes can inhibit long-term competitiveness because manufacturers rely on imported inputs and contribute disproportionately to overall exports and manufacturing job growth
