Ask me how bitter I am AGAIN that the supposed sustainability requirements for residential buildings apply to MFH but SFH. One of a million reasons we need urbanists who actually own MFH on our elected bodies. This was designed by homeowners who assumed MFH = rental.

Unclear how anyone can look at the totality of disadvantage MFH ownership has relative to rental MFH & ownership SFH — financing, construction defect, building code — and simply declare that the current production of MFH rental studios in double loaded corridor buildings to simply be meeting demand.
The single-stair point access block has higher floorplate efficiency, but nothing is preventing the building on top from consolidating the four rightmost units to form a three-bedroom as on the bottom. The proliferation of small apartments in new multifamily in North America is about market demand.

Idk maybe I'm an extremist but my view on this is that I do not care about making SFH more accessible. The goal is more MFH construction (really, more construction in general in cities, but the only way to increase units via infill is MFH)
yeah this is objectively bad for equity, feeds the homeowner mythos, and makes high resource neighborhoods less accessible to renters but im afraid this is a glonzo issue

At some point planners completely transitioned to regulating MFH almost purely for the benefit of passerbys and neighbors.
