#microcalcification
Second mammogram done.

Ouch!

During last week’s mammogram, my right boob didn’t hurt, which oddly enough is where I found the lump and confirmed a cyst. No problem.

The left was uncomfortable then.

This time was extremely painful.

They found microcalcification.

In stable patients with extensive noncalcified plaque volume at baseline, 18 months of evolocumab treatment was associated with a shift toward a lower risk quantitative plaque phenotype and reduction in microcalcification activity

They both have their role, but mammography is a really well validated technique, and some suspicious features like microcalcification can't be seen on ultrasound. Ultrasound is very operator dependent and is better at looking at a known lesion rather than screening.

Exciting news in heart health! A recent study found that 18 months of #evolocumab treatment led to a shift toward lower-risk plaque in heart arteries & reduced microcalcification activity, without significant change in total plaque volume.

The MEXBreast database was created to solve this. It includes Mexican digital mammogram images labeled with Microcalcification Clusters, in 50, 70, and 100 microns. MEXBreast aids in training CNNs to better detect early breast cancer signs.

Three or more microcalcifications in 1 sq cm form a Microcalcification Cluster (MCC), rated BI-RADS category 4, indicating cancer suspicion. Mammograms, X-ray images of the breast, are used to detect these. Half of such mammograms confirm cancer after biopsy.
