Finally, the net lanes are prepped and banding can begin! This adult male egigi here (or sometimes chichirika on Rota, or Micronesian Myzomela in English) was one of the first captures. Banded with permits and released as part of work with @instbirdpop.bsky.social 🎨🦉🌏🧪

Some maps were talismans. Micronesian stick charts woven of palm and shell represented ocean swells and currents. To those who held the knowledge, the sea itself could be read like scripture. #MythologyMonday

RIP Sandra Harding — a true pathfinder, who taught me to see science through the eyes of Micronesian navigation practices 🌺
A dear feminist science studies mentor passed on March 5. Have a good journey Sandra Harding. ❤️

Harding was UCLA Distinguished Professor Emerita of Education and Gender Studies, former Director of the Center for the Study of Women.

Link is an oral history interview with Sandra on her career.

There is no good return to some Arcadian past. Talking with a friend about mapping, I came across this Smithsonian page that refuses to name how Micronesian navigational knowledge was erased:

What an incredible story: Meatpacking workers who speak 57 languages are ON STRIKE against the behemoth JBS in Greeley, CO. Reminds me of historical accounts of the Lawrence, Mass. strike of 1912, where workers spoke dozens of languages, and often sang to communicate.
