Today is the last day of the microseason I called “Too Fucking Hot – FUCK” in Light Rains Sometimes Fall.

I think we've hit that magic microseason of 1-2 weeks where we're not paying for heating OR cooling

No pressure to clean the whole house.
One spot is enough.

Wipe one surface. Add one flower. Walk away like a hero.
Japan's microseason: "Chrysanthemums bloom."
Save this for a tired evening.

I love the floral microseason at the end of April & early May, which I call the season of pinks and purples. In the 5 minute round trip between my garden & my allotment, there was my wonderfully named Dicentra spectablilis, bright fuschia. Hidden in corners & the alleys was the violet of violets...

"false spring" is such a cruel and undeserved name for a beautiful microseason... step outside right now and tell me that what you feel is "false"

We've entered that brief microseason where it's clear they meant "fabulous gourds", not "doing violence to pumpkins".

I’m tempted to suggest a readalong of Light Rains Sometimes Fall through the year, with seasonal posts for each microseason. It might be quite fun. But it also feels like the kind of thing I won’t remember to sustain. Anyway, if you do feel like doing it, use the hashtag #LightRains

The California conkers (buckeyes) are well on their way. We’re in that confusing microseason here when the afternoons are hotter than they’ve been all summer but the nights are cool & dewy, birds gather in great numbers, & all around are signs of autumn.

Would ‘Summer in the Sun, Autumn in the Shade’ be a good microseason, or does it last too long?

Today is the first day of the microseason I called ‘Clear Light Shines Through Mist’ in my book ‘Light Rains Sometimes Fall: A British Year in Japan’s 72 Seasons.’

If we used microseasons here, today would start the microseason of Starlings Mobbing the Yard. Dozens out there tossing fallen leaves in search of overwintering insects or larvae.

This is an underappreciated microseason that happens after the Big Dark and before Smoke.

The good news is that we're just a few days away from the final “72nd microseason and soon signs of spring will begin to appear.
