#microtrends
I feel like Tiktok made a ton of microtrends really accessible and popular all at once so people were really open minded for like 1-3 years, but the speed with which trends accelerate and fall out of fashion means a bunch of 15-20 year olds absolutely hate that not everyone dresses the same

Why be boring and bland when you can be whimsy-maxxing - The Rider News
As quickly as summer break came and went, so did the season’s microtrends. I did not think much of them, as usual. I mean, butter yellow was cute, blue and brown was very Y2K and I just did not care t...

There’s a lifetime of work in marveling at how social media has laid bare how susceptible and anxious for social acceptance/approval the everyday person really is. The mere fact that microtrends work on us… 😮‍💨 No one is immune etc etc but I really am built different.

I realized something about Trump's sniper obsession. People assume it's a reaction to the Butler assassination attempt, which was stopped by a sniper - but maybe there's a hidden hand at play here: what if Mark Penn is subtly working to restore the reputation that Ezra Klein so memorably destroyed?

I think it's a mix of both. G1 purists are unbearable AND loud, and, some design choices feel like it's following microtrends (Looking at you Core Refresh 2 Lala). But. I think it kinda works in G3's favours. It feels like it's always evolving, like... actual tweens?

when exactly was the turning point for halloween decorations being filled to the brim with microtrends?

Every so often I stumble upon someone subjecting their partner to one of these microtrends, look the victim in the eye and think “mother of God, they’ve been cuckolded by IG Reels.”

Brilliant writing there, on meaningful nostalgia as for the pre-"AI" times:
<<MySpace’s heyday remains as a high water mark for online creativity, a time when individuality and personality flourished without being flattened into microtrends and viral moments.>>

MySpace was a millennial dream – but does it deserve a comeback?
There’s plenty of nostalgia for the Noughties social media platform that preceded Facebook, where individuality was celebrated and your new favourite musician was just a few clicks away. But does MyS...

Each week I do a roundup of movie trailers for friends, and the latest trend seems to be youtube thumbnails of a female star grabbed on the least flattering frame possible and then post-processed until they their skin looks wrinkled. It's bizarre. (Thumbnail microtrends in general are bizarre)

It’s a valid question. And there’s more to it than just the probability of combinations. The variability could depend on the cohort, with some showing stronger convergence in what they buy and how they combine it whether because they follow microtrends or simply have a narrower range of choices.

Remember when viral meant *everyone* saw it? Now your algorithm tailors micro-trends so perfectly, we're all main characters in our own niche reality show. Are we truly unique or just uniquely targeted? Mind blown.

Gen Z refuses to be plainly legible to Gen X+ and that gives me hope for the future, actually. Experimental fashion is vital playfulness for shedding what’s become rigid. Compounding microtrends into sub-sub-sub cultures was always leading to a dissolution of meaning. Gen Z Belongs.

i'm enjoying the way the trending topics on here are now somehow broad and overly descriptive in a way that's totally unhelpful. it reminds me of the opposite thing, when twitter was testing out regional microtrends and it was always shit like "Trending now for Boston: #Laundry"

I had to look him up too. He’s basically a marketing guy. His big claim to fame seems to be the book “Microtrends” from 2007, so, you know, a guy who really has his fingers on the pulse of today.

Remember when viral trends lasted more than 3 hours? Now it's just a collective aesthetic fever dream you can't *quite* grasp before it's gone. My brain is officially digital soup.
