Kind of speaks to the level to which people were more invested in the idea of Neil Gaiman than the actual writing past a point--which if you've read the fairly midbrow stuff he wrote, compared with his outsized celebrity--makes sense. I always suspected as much.
It's inspiring how Neil Gaiman fans let out a collective ugh and then stopped being Neil Gaiman fans.

Michael Connelly does midbrow airport lit with his Bosch series. Elmore Leonard does it with some humor. Mick Herron's Slow Horses books are pretty good midbrow, think he's got 9 books now.
