It's funny because sometimes I wonder , " Will I ever see a Miike film I don't like?"
And to date the only time I've come close is when I stopped watching Dead or Alive 3 ten minutes in because it has a piss color filter over it.

Yes definitely a fans thing. Again not perfect and god forbid, as a movie it is downright boring for non-fans, but it is made with care and attention which is more than most other adaptations before and after. Miike didn't disappoint after making that lil Yattaman treat

Loved this one. Like you said it only really works if you're familiar with the source material already - but if you are you are in for a treat of Takeshi Miike using all his genre film expertise to adapt the character designs directly into a weird and fun live action version.

Takashi Miike's Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo puts Shun Oguri's gambling, extorting detective beside Lily James's FBI agent. It is the first of Pressman Film's planned city-by-city sequels to reach a screen,

The Miike Snow needle drop when Snooki has to leave before getting that guy’s number at the lake and then immediately cutting to JWoww swinging on that girl for saying “who’s your fat friend” ?? breathtaking television

That was the reaction I had to it too. Some edgelord box checking going on but man a chore to watch. I find early Miike very patchy though.

I’d heard so much about this that when j finally watched it a few months ago I found it more of a comedy than anything, and still pretty tame and boring. I was hyped up for it to be really hard to watch. It’s the weakest miike film I’ve seen

Watched Audition (1999, directed by Takashi Miike) for the first time tonight and thoroughly enjoyed the dark second half. Pairs nicely with the 2026 series Furious from Elizabeth Meriweather and Curry Barker’s Obsession.

For some reason this is the only Miike film i care anymore. The rest i’ve sold (or are in the cellar). I remember when this came out and very few seemed to care about it. Some good reviews, but most comments i heard were more in the vein of ”meh”. And now it seems to be more appreciated 🏆
