I'll be 63 next year and have just seen the words 'Arpanet' and 'Milnet' for the first time. I googled them, as you do, and now I'm wondering wtf else has been happening during my lifetime that nobody told me about.

It was (again, up to around 1994-1995ish) possible for an ISP to lose its Internet access altogether if it did NOT drill this knowledge into the heads of the users, because up until that point the "Internet" was largely a collection of academic networks (under NSFnet), ARPAnet, and MILnet
