My hc is that the earring is his first magical focus, that he keeps, just in case ( like sudden mindflayer abduction.) later he uses the magic staffs as focus... So yes. A symbol for magic for him.

Mind flayer for day 29! I never played the early editions of dnd but by the gods I love the art! Here is my take on the old mind flayer. Also Ohoho markers are overhyped, pigment is good but I am less excited by them, kinda feel like Crayola markers.
