I keep forgetting how "The Saucer News" is supposed to work, then I remember literally no one cares, and I am liberated like a plastic bag on the wind. #### first thing (you wouldn't get it.) UFOs are ugly now. there has to be a reason. UFOs being folklore represent some hidden dimension of the human psyche, cultural motifs and assumptions, fears and predictions of the future, etc. No one sees saucers anymore. No one seems to see black triangles anymore. It's all weird, random, amorphous shitbags that are supposed to be from other dimensions, not other planets. That's the narrative. Now obviously this is just AI slop, because this is the sort of thing AI is good at slopping, so I'm not giving anyone credit for these images. This aesthetic seems to have started with the "jellyfish ufo" that I'm pretty certain is either balloons or bird shit, and evolved into a whole "biological UFO" subgenre that weirdly for something that's supposedly always been real, no one ever mentioned as having seen until it became a meme. The story is more _interesting_ when ufos have these wierd technological details and appearances, and your mind has something to chew on other than a dull saucer. The most common detail I'm aware of is fire and sparks - The Lonnie Zamora UFO (which was probably a balloon) had an odd rocket on the bottom. The Japan Airlines Flight 1628 encounter involved a weird cylinder covere4d in sparking lights. Sometimes there are reports of weird antennas, tubes and gizmos. For instance why did the Hudson Valley UFOs have so many lights on them? Lights on UFOs are interesting. Logically there's no reason why an alien spacecraft should be covered in lights but they are. Suspending disbelief, this is one of those uncanny details that makes it seem like technology that's both grounded but alien. I have a particular fixation on details like where the doors are, what the landing structs look like. But it always at least seems like technology, and it has a goofy, naive charm. The Falcon Lake incident is probably a hoax but the part where he gets burned by a vent on the side of the craft when it takes off is a neat detail. Sometimes it seems as if people might even encounter something weird (not extraterrestrial or extradimensional, but outside of their frame of reference.) I'm actually certain at least one famous UFO case from the 60s to the 80s involved MKULTRA style psychological operations, classified craft or something. I'm more convinced that's what happened to Betty and Barney Hill than that they were abducted by aliens. But who knows? I mean, somebody knows. I don't. Do you? And then you get something like the Potosi sheep slayer where you can't even comprehend what got lost in translation. Gnomes with red moustaches and jetpacks flying around exanguinating sheep with giant hooks. I don't know what if anything this weird bag of fuckery says about the cultural zeitgeist, if we've just given up on the idea of any sort of consensus reality and thus it reflects the chaos we see in the unknown, if it's a manifestation of the alienation of technology or of modern society, without so much as a hint of humanity in its form, or if it's just a meme. Honestly, _honestly_ this does kind of tickle the eldritch horror itch in the back of my brain. If a human had come up with this I'd be impressed at just how surreal it is. I can even imagine this thing shifting and morphing as it flies through the air, like it's a hyperdimensional object and we're just seeing its cross section in three dimensional space, or it's mimicking "technology" the way insects will mimick predators or prey for lures. The idea that some kind of weird space gnome is driving _this_ from Dimension X is at least better than the greys. Are we done with the greys now? Can we go back to having some variety in our spooky stuff? But I know I'm putting way more thought into it than whoever made it did. And to be fair, _if_ one were to believe these were alien or interdimensional craft, it makes sense that they wouldn't look like something a human would design. And I think that's the problem - there's nothing to really connect to here. UFOs like any folklore have to contain a narrative, they're symbols, archetypes like dragons and angels and faeries. These are just weird shapes, they don't _say_ anything. It makes me long for the days when Bigfoot would step out of a saucer with a mysterious orb like a simian wizard. Which is the kind of thing that happens more often in Bigfoot folklore than I think the Bigfoot people want to admit, because Bigfoots are no different than ghosts, aliens and mind goblins. I have a hard time imagining the folklore that comes with something like this. Apparently, from what I've seen, it's that these are living beings and not craft. In the same way that the angels in Neon Genesis Evangelion represented alternate strains of human evolution, so maybe these things are just people that evolved in a dimension entirely unlike ours. But seriously I remember one of the most exciting times I had messing around in a Google VR app I won't mention the name of because fuck you pay me, was when I hit the "random" button and wound up inside of CERN. I had fun virtually exploring the tunnels and looking up at the LHC and I guess the Google camera person went though people's offices too. In a world where I had time and money and not crippling anxiety I might have enjoyed an actual tour, but the fun thing about VR is you get to do things like stare at whiteboards. I wish CERN well during their hibernation. I'm not holding them _personally_ responsible for the fact that my keys are never where I expect them to be, I just think it's weird that always seems to happen after I have my morning coffee, with milk and sugar... _crystals._ I'm just saying. Turns out to reason it's so small and simple is that it depends so much on extremely terse C and pointer math and it's been weeks now and still nothing works. But I found a new pattern. A new _pattern._ For creating LuaJIT metaclasses. So now I have to rewrite _everything_ around that. I don't want to. I don't need to. The code I have is still perfectly usable and I could spend what little time I have left in this world actually finishing a thing but _I have to._ I made some updates to my linking script. It now adds each new link I find to my human.json file and includes metadata separately, and caches to local files rather than overwriting the site files. I should document that. I added project pages but need projects, so the templates are just sitting there half done. Still plan to include shitty old poetry and short stories and the like. My plans to double down on learning animation and character rigging this year probably won't happen. Ironically the thing I've made the most progress on this year is this site, and the various scripts and plugins I've added (that I will put up on codeberg eventually), because one of the reasons I decided to get this site up and running again is to inspire me to finish the other things.
