Mineko Iwasaki, 1960s or 1970s, Japan's most famous and celebrated geiko (geisha) of the 20th century. She served as the primary real-life source for the novel Memoirs of a Geisha before publishing her own true autobiography, Geisha: A Life, to accurately portray her rigorous training.

Captured in full theatrical pose during the height of her legendary career in Kyoto’s Gion Kobu, this classic portrait of Mineko Iwasaki (岩崎峰子)—bearing the print title Gion Mineko (祇園峰子) in the lower right cartouche—epitomizes the pinnacle of mid-20th-century geiko elegance and performance art. Posing alongside a tall, wooden standing lantern (andon), Iwasaki demonstrates the subtle kinetic grace required of a master of the Inoue-ryū school of dance. With her right hand resting lightly upon the lantern’s frame, her left hand draws up the front fold of her trailing kimono (hikizuri) in a traditional walking gesture. Flawlessly applied oshiroi white makeup frames her features, accented by delicate red lip color and softly shaded brows.

Accompanying the figure, vertical poetic lines in the upper right corner evoke the haunting lyrics of a traditional jiuta or nagauta dance piece ("Hana mo yuki mo..."). Blending classical Kyoto dress traditions with a magnetic stage presence, the portrait stands as a vivid testament to the discipline, poise, and artistic mastery that made Iwasaki the most celebrated geiko of her era.
