#minicabs
I’m not sure about other UK cities, but in London these provisions only apply to black cabs and not other forms of private hire such as minicabs or Ubers.

London has been leading the way in cleaning up our PHV fleet, but going fully electric has to be the goal.

So it's good to see TfL proposing this crucial next step which will lead to a fully electric private hire fleet.

Wish we had such clarity for vans!

They’re banking on the Uber model. Vigorously undercut existing supply on price, win all the market share, then jack up prices once dominant. But rather than affecting city centre minicabs, it’s the capacity for independent human thought.

Used to go clubbing there late 90s. At Bagleys. It was FERAL. Bring back prostitution and dodgy minicabs . Those were the days

😁 Our 'bunker': chambers on loan from London Underground. Turned up 1st day: door locked, staff didn't have key. Back early 2nd day: engineers still busy emptying place of all their kit, tools, hi-viz, etc. Emergency Phone had 3 numbers next to it: minicabs, Chinese takeaway, local bookies shop!

A full hour of both of us fighting the bastard tyre, then another half hour fighting the bastard Uber app to send me a ride that would take a busted bike, and finally waiting for a delayed train to the next big town with minicabs and better Uber service.

KNEW it was too good. 😠😭

One of my friends was claiming recently that minicabs are cheaper than uber now (in London)
September 8, 2026 at 9:36 AM
In my head minicabs are still more reliable for a 4am airport run than Uber even within London. Not sure if that's actually true anymore but....

I'd guess minicabs offer more certainty on price and availability?

If it is something you want to just have booked on a regular basis (like getting a kid to school) or a long time ahead (to/ from an airport), minicabs make more sense for some people.

In Birmingham, which certain has uber, I get quicker more reliable service if I use the app for the taxi firm in my part of the city than I do the uber app. Can be cheaper.

Also I see loads of minicabs dropping kids at nursery

"The challenge is no longer about keeping a “human in the loop”, but ensuring that when we do, humans retain the skills, judgment and agency that make their presence meaningful."

Very good point by @gevansjones.bsky.social in @theconversation.com

i would love it if you got me a cool robot to work on while i continue my effort to rid my life of self-medication & polypharmacy. i am not comfortable spending my own money on this stuff right now, even tho i know it'll help me during the rehabilitative period. but you can!
