#monastics
The ones who think hijab is evil do not think Catholics are Christians in the first place and permitting women to be celibate monastics is one of their grievances

Announcing my new record “Revolutions” out Feb 6 at Bandcamp & streaming services. This record was written during a 7 week course I took through Plum Village Monastery with monastics & climate science professionals discussing the role engaged Buddhism can play in a world experiencing worst case…

We are underway! We were already in Swat, modern day Pakistan, and now we are looking at urban clergy and monastics in Vercelli!
On Tuesday join us on a massive monasticism fest on the #IMC2025. Four sessions packed with monastic goodness from South Asia to Gaul and from Nubia to Rome. Thirteen papers, four moderators, two organisers: it is the place to be for early medieval monasticism fans at the IMC!

Sorta of telling that when I researched language that medieval monastics might use to describe intimate relationships (variously defined) I really didn't get much from the letters of Heloise and Abelard but I got loads from Alcuin's letters to Archbishop Arno.

Reading about Celtic monastics and how they had to have killer glutes from all the lunges* they did as acts of devotion

“in the modern academic environment professors act more like middle managers than monastics…forces driv[e] us to constantly look at screens..But there’s nobility in pushing back..
universities have..the opportunity [&!] obligation to integrate..sustained concentration into their social mission”
Is Email Making Professors Stupid?
It used to simplify crucial tasks. Now it’s strangling scholars’ ability to think.

a japanese word for rebellion, "ikki", came from contracts of communal self-defense that peasants burghers & lay religious would sign in the round as a gesture of equal obligation - often overseen by nichiren buddhist monastics - followed by the contract being burned & everyone drinking the ashes
what if communism had knights? they swear oathes to the people instead of monarchs? paladins of the proletariat?

And the ones who didn't were MONASTICS, who by definition had three square meals a day and a bed to sleep in
The fucking Renaissance artists whose names drip off your tongue without much prompting had fucking PATRONS!
this is why the whole “oh, suffering creates great art” thing is bullshit

you know what’s conducive to art? a roof over your head and food on the table

you know what isn’t? stressing out over where the fuck the rent money is going to come from

Westerners are also remarkably good at failing to grasp non-western religion as something actually believed & structuring society, vs Collected Wisdom. See also Buddhism (esp. Zen), whose “it’s just like, being calm?” rep is completely incompatible with eg actual Thai monastics’ political power…

In a couple of days, we will witness a historic moment of #Buddhism in the #UnitedStates as the #WalkForPeace monks reaches the #WhiteHouse. Calls have been made inviting American Buddhist monastics of all traditions to join the Theravadin monks.

walkelin has a very involved sense of dress, but he is mindful of his surroundings and the system he navigates. while he takes great pride in wearing tighter corsetry, more sumptuous fabrics, etc. his usual garb during the day is a modest gown and wimple in the style of halonic monastics.

Whew boy, lemme tell you about how many anime fans understand Buddhism and it's monastics only as an exoticized aesthetic while spending zero thought on grasping anything deeper about its material differences from Christianity than "reincarnation" and "karma" (both of which they misunderstand).
I had this Demon Slayer thought on tiktok but I'm gonna have it here as well: watching other Western fans talk about hell in the series very Christian-ly ("they're going to burn in hell forever") reminds me that a lot of intl Anime fans really don't see anime as a Japanese product when it matters

I very much enjoy this commercial, & partly because it opens up for a discussion about how the Latin Church & monastics embraced new technology, contrary to the current ongoing narrative about monks being technologically conservative, which is being peddled by AI-vangelists.

Most are Benedictine monastics and each was welcoming and loving to me. Sister Jeanne (my left) taught intro bio in 1994 and told me she remembered me because I was the only one who understood the yeast genetics experiments she designed! Ken Jones (my right) taught 1960's History (class size of 6!).

I wish we could recover & expand the tradition of Religious Orders in the Episcopal Church, so that individual parishes might have a community of life-professed monastics who lived at/near the church & held the Daily Office/celebrated Feast Days in the chapel, open to all. Is that too much to ask?🕯️

Plenty of monastics voluntarily undertook more severe forms of asceticism but I can’t really have Ciarán do that and also do protagonist stuff.

I am fascinated with the spectrum of cultural assumptions in Catholic circles with respect to Christian monastics.

The most recent assumption I encountered was, "y'all are kinda like the Knights of Columbus or something, right?"

Of course grumpy monastics are essentially the reason I still have a job in academia so I will not be too hard on them.

“…and that’s why all monastics need to follow the same structured routine every day, eat limited varieties of food, avoid idle social interactions, and spend their time discussing obscure details of ancient manuscripts.”

—St. Benedict, c. 530 (more or less)

Jesuits may do tricks, but monastics inaugerate centuries long shennanigans. We're still waiting for everyone to catch up.

It actually is really interesting to read the penitentials and see which forms of affection were permitted (among monastics; expectations for laypeople were much looser).

(Bombadil starts acquiring large tracts of land to add monastics to)
