On #ThisDayInHistory in 1925, #JohnScopes was arrested for teaching organic #evolution, in violation of state law, starting the infamous #MonkeyTrial. As late as 1967 the #ButlerAct was still law in Tennessee, perhaps helping to explain generations of #science #ignorance there.

May 25, 1925 - John T. Scopes was indicted for teaching Darwin's theory of evolution. Scopes, a football coach and substitute high school biology teacher in Dayton, Tennessee, agreed to be arrested and put on trial for teaching evolution.
