Ship's Bell

Photo: A ship's bell mounted in front of some ship's machinery and engraved with the ship's name: "Sea Cloud," Eastern Atlantic, off the coast of Spain April 2023 According to the Naval History and Heritage Command website: "Used for signaling, keeping time, and sounding alarms, bells are an important part of a ship's routine and readiness. Before the advent of the chronometer, time at sea was measured by the trickle of sand through a half-hour glass. One of the ship's boys had the duty of watching the glass and turning it when the sand had run out. When he turned the glass, he struck the bell as a signal that he had performed this vital function." https://www.history.navy.mil/browse-by-topic/heritage/customs-and-traditions0/the-ship-s-bell.html OM-1: ƒ/5.6, 1/1250, 150mm, ISO400

Photo: A rider on horseback chases down a cow in a competitive cattle sorting event at the D Bar V Arena in Drexel, Missouri in January 2013. All three are moving toward the camera. The cow, which is the closest to us of the three, is speckled and wears a Number 6 bib. It should be sorted before the cow with a 7 and not before the one with a 5. The horse, immediately behind the cow, has its head turned sharply to the left and is eyeballing the cow with its wide open rightside eye. The rider is leaning forward slightly in the saddle and is fully focussed on the cow. The riders aren't told which cow to start with until the event starts. The riders have 60 seconds to move 10 cattle from one pen into another, without letting an 11th (unnumbered) cow into that pen, in sequence starting with whichever cow is wearing the bib with the number that is called out as the event begins. Photo: monochrome the head and neck of a white horse who's been hanging out in the pasture, from his right eye down into his muddy mane. He's standing next to a light ginger horse, but only a bit of her shoulder is showing. His eye is black, at least in this photo. His eye lash is white, was white always. This is Cain. He was my wife's horse, a magnificent beast who took extremely good care of her on their many excellent adventures, always always always bringing her home safely. Cellphone Photo: A small, silky white dog, wearing oversized (for him) sunglasses that reflect the ceiling light (in the center) and the windows (at their top edge) (or maybe (?) it's the other way 'round) lays on a hardwood floor, looking expectantly at the camera (not shown), which is in a phone (not shown), held by a guy (not shown) who is supposed to be working but is also supposed to be watching the dog, who has been left in the house by his wife (not shown), who is at work (outside the home (not shown)) but but told her sister (not shown) the dog could stay with her husband (the above-mentioned guy) while her sister (still not shown) was off doing something else. Both the dog and the guy are wondering what they can get up to while they are unsupervised, so, if you could see the guy, he would probably have the same expression as the dog. But neither the dog nor the guy came up with anything good, other than making this picture. Still, all in all, a pretty good day. Photo: Monochrome. Moody light and shadow wrap around a beautiful model, the light and shadow that is typically reserved for a woman leaning against the sill of a window in an upstairs Parisian studio. Maybe a little cleavage or side boob. She might be posing for a perfume ad. As it happens, however, this model is a golden retriever, and this studio, a mud puddle … on a cinder track, behind an abandoned high school. So, sorry. No cleavage. No side boob. No perfume. But, she is no less lovely for that. And the light, the shadow, no less moody. Her name is Lucy. She is a patient and excellent model.
