#moschops
Permian synapsid #Moschops squares up! I think they have an uncanny-valley charm when viewed from our mammalian perspective, and would have been very intimidating in person. If the attitudes of our big herbivorous mammals are anything to go by, it would probably be best to keep your distance!

I actually pitches some ideas to the author via email, including one focusing on the Hyainailouros-Amphicyon rivalry, one focusing on Titanis at the start of the Pleistocene and one following an adolescent Moschops trying to climb the dominance hierachy.

Lots of new dinocephalian data here in this excellent paper, including possible soft tissues of the brain of Moschops

Happy #FossilFriday! New research on Moschops reveals clues to its life: flexible daily activity, possible swimming ability, unusual brain growth, and potentially preserved soft brain tissue—the first possible evidence in a non-mammalian synapsid.

Exceptional preservation informs the paleobiology of tapinocephalid dinocephalians
The tapinocephalid dinocephalian Moschops is one of the most iconic taxa of the middle Permian, yet its paleobiology remains one of the least well-known. Here, we address some aspects of paleoneurolo...

@moschops.bsky.social I just want to say, thank you for calling yourself moschops on social media. It’s a word I haven’t heard in many many years and hearing it (well seeing it) today has made me feel.

And I only just learned it’s a real dinosaur not just something made up for kids TV.

Cheers.

First some reason I can't cope with Moschops stance/ gait. It feels like it must be wrong but science doesn't care about my feelings
