While Machop's name is probably just a mix of Macho and Chop, I have always thought it was also named after Moschops, an ancient, muscular, head-butting creature with a stubby little tail and raised ridges on its head, that always looks like its doing press ups.

Permian synapsid #Moschops squares up! I think they have an uncanny-valley charm when viewed from our mammalian perspective, and would have been very intimidating in person. If the attitudes of our big herbivorous mammals are anything to go by, it would probably be best to keep your distance!

Last year portrait sketch of Moschops capensis, a famous tapinocephalid dinocephalian from Middle Permian of South Africa. It was a massive herbivore with thickened skull for head-butting and/or thermoregulation. Done in Paint Tool Sai 2.0.
