There are cultures that follow matrilineal inheritance and power, the Mosuo come to mind, but definitely the idea that pre-colonial societies were structured along lines of gender and sex is very post-colonial.
But there are concrete examples out there of matriarchies, just not "mother gaia" types.

There are cultures that follow matrilineal inheritance and power, the Mosuo come to mind, but definitely the idea that pre-colonial societies were structured along lines of gender and sex is very post-colonial.
