Tell el-Abqain: A horse buried with care inside a garrison, a stela of Merneptah written in hieratic (cursive Egyptian), scarabs and other amulets (pictured), beads, all found within two streets of mudbrick living quarters and grain stores.

Permanent structures are almost exclusively made of cob or mudbrick if there's enough available fuel for kilns. Because of this, they tend not to be very tall and are often only single-family dwellings. They're warmed by a central hearth and cooled by built-in windcatchers.

Good morning, #OctoberWorldbuilders! Let's talk about buildings in our desert societies. What is the architecture like? How do they keep their homes warm/cool as needed?

Breaking news: Aug 12, 2026—Tel Ashdod reported new Iron Age gate results: mudbrick walls, ancient surfaces, a kernos fragment, and metalworking debris. Critics once called Philistine cities literary exaggerations. Ashdod’s gate and material culture are real. #BiblicalArchaeology #Ashdod

Tamanrasset, 1992
Post & Tele building, arched mudbrick facade glowing red in the sun — & someone still rolling up on a camel to run errands
That's the thing about Tamanrasset back then: you had a modern building handling mail, right next to guys in full Tuareg dress moving through town the old way

1972, Tamanrasset.
That little Citroën 2CV rolling up to the pump, roof piled with gear, right next to a tanker making its delivery. Mudbrick walls, one lone tree, dust everywhere — this was it, the last fill-up before diving deep into the Sahara.
Life was hard but memorable.

As you know, I grow lots of plants, and have often had a keen interest in herbs.

For the last three years or so, I have been ordering from Mudbrick, who sell a very wide selection of herbs, most of which you will never find at Bunnings.

They are located in Queensland.

Highly recommended.
