The 8 hectare multivallate hillfort of Eggardon @nationaltrust.org.uk #Dorset is a muscular piece of Iron Age engineering

The majority of hollows still visible inside the enclosure, however, appear to be post medieval quarry pits

White Sheet Hill, an Iron Age multivallate hillfort. Contains a Bronze Age ring barrow and traces of hut circles, with burial mounds and a Neolithic enclosure close by. Sweeping views of the Blackmore Vale and the Wiltshire Downs, a truly atmospheric place

In which the Construction Historian learns a new word.
'multivallate' apparently means more than one set of ramparts.
Vallate from Latin 'vallum' meaning wall or rampart. 'Wall' comes from 'vallum' too.

The earlier, single rampart and ditch (univallate) hillforts usually have more scattered / slighter evidence of settlement (houses / pits) and the later multivallate have large timber roundouses, grannaries, storage facilities and roads, but yes they all have occupation evidence of some kind 👍

Happy Winter Solstice / Christmas from the land of the Durotriges!

We're going to close the hillfort gate for a couple of days, so take care out there and see you all soon

All together now:

"After all there's only one more multivallate Iron Age enclosure till Christmas"

Twas the last #HillfortsWednesday before Christmas

When all through Dorset

Not a rampart was stirring

Not even the sinuously muscular multivallate eastern circuit of Eggardon Iron Age hillfort

(here captured from the road that skirts its NE side in Feb 2020)

Happy Holidays everyone !!
