𝙈𝙮𝙭𝙞𝙙𝙞𝙪𝙢 𝙧𝙝𝙤𝙙𝙚𝙞 (Cnidaria: Myxozoa) is a kidney-infecting myxosporean originally described from the European bitterling.
This study is the first comprehensive assessment of the species through morphological, ecological and molecular methods.🧪

@thibautbrunet.bsky.social if cnidarians evolved into myxozoa... actually... do myxozoa move between single and multiple cell stage? certain 'yeasts' surely do...

A jellyfish evolved back to a single call that doesn’t need oxygen and now lives in the eggs of a sturgeon. Repeat: there’s a single-called jellyfish vibing O2-free inside CAVIAR AND WE CAN’T STUDY IT BECAUSE IT LIVES IN THE WORLD’S MOST EXPENSIVE AND IMPOSSIBLE-TO-IMPORT FOOD.

All of the pictures taken of me involve gesticulating wildly about how cool some pathogen is.
(Honestly, if you don’t get excited about myxozoa… have a seat, I’m about to get you excited about myxozoa.)

regular myxozoa are already pretty cool🪼🧪

Myxozoa 0001 was once a ███████ from █████████. She was mutated by a Scorned that didn't finish the job. She was taken to a facility where she was tested on (including the mask, which allows her now lungless body to breathe) and woke up without the memories of her past.

Somehow I missed this in 2020 (something else going on?), but there is a cnidarian that has lost ability for aerobic respiration. That's going to make other animals jelly-ous. 🧪

Myxozoa are a good example I think: their multicellular form is much simplified compared to ancestral cnidarians. (The subjectivity of quantifying complexity is always a bit of an issue admittedly!)

Best cnidarians!
These jellies are so much more wholesome than the wicked Myxozoa, 3 times voted Worst Cnidarian™️ by a panel of fish.
The Protozoa have beef too:
Myxozoa fake like Protozoa in fish and look like a *different* parasite in oligochaete worms.
It took DNA to link stages as one beastie.

Formerly adopted by Myxozoa, Kora grew up in a caring and loving family, training her immense powers with a sense of responsibility. Still a merry prankster, she kept her youthful energy, determined to be good where the First Mother, her biological mother, went evil. Here, she is an adult.

myxozoa are so weird, they're microscopic animals that have evolved to lose multicellular traits like nervous systems and muscles and in one known case even mitochondria, meaning it doesn't even metabolize using oxygen
