#myxozoa
This is not a fungus actually! Slime molds are huge unwalled mobile single cells that digest live prey internally. Fungi are immobile, walled, multicellular decomposers. Many are toxic or pathogenic. They are more closely related to animals! Both produce spores, but so do moss, kelp, myxozoa, etc

Transmissible cancers aren't even the only time animals that were big and normal evolved to be small and weird.

Myxozoans are tiny parasites of both fish like salmon and bryozoans. Molecular trees revealed that they evolved from free-living cnidarian ancestors shared with jellies🪼 & coral 🪸.

Ppl always point out how weird it is that whales are mammals that evolved back into aquatic animals, but none think about the myxozoa, who are jellyfish that evolved back into single cell organisms (with some of those then evolving into multicellular worm-like creatures!)

All of the pictures taken of me involve gesticulating wildly about how cool some pathogen is.
(Honestly, if you don’t get excited about myxozoa… have a seat, I’m about to get you excited about myxozoa.)

Myxozoa are obligate endoparasites, though, right? They're not free-living, reproducing protists.

Myxozoa are a good example I think: their multicellular form is much simplified compared to ancestral cnidarians. (The subjectivity of quantifying complexity is always a bit of an issue admittedly!)

@thibautbrunet.bsky.social if cnidarians evolved into myxozoa... actually... do myxozoa move between single and multiple cell stage? certain 'yeasts' surely do...
