At 11.02 a.m. on August 9, 1945, the sky above Nagasaki was filled by a white flash and all the clocks stopped. A gigantic mushroom-shaped cloud soared up towards the blue sky and left a devastated city behind. #Nagasaki80 #NuclearBan

It's a shame that neither toronagashi went ahead, but at least at one, the candles were lit and lanterns displayed. Given how many people died in the river next to these steps, I feel this was important - as I discussed with a Jiji Press reporter: www.jiji.com/jc/article?k...

Today while out running errands, I saw this car with multiple stickers. One said "WWII I served," and one said "Korea I served." There were also Army, Navy, and Retired stickers. I left a thank you note for this family.

Nuclear weapons are inhumane, indiscriminate, and illegal under the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of #NuclearWeapons. They risk ending civilization, draining $100B/year from human needs, and accidents are inevitable.

Abolish them, before history repeats. #Nagasaki80

80 years on, the shadows of Hiroshima & Nagasaki remind us: humanity’s genius can build wonders or unleash ruin. Nuclear weapons are not power, they are the failure to imagine peace. Our future depends on choosing creation over destruction.
